THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- High school students are at the cusp of becoming young independent adults. Their life experiences and learning's shape their attitudes and outlook. Community service is a great way for young people to gain hands on work experience. Volunteering not only benefits the community but it has surprising benefits for the young volunteers as well. It gives them an opportunity to learn life skills, job skills, stay out of trouble, meet new people, build relationships, and contribute to the community. With community service, youth volunteers get a sense of accomplishment as well as a direction in their life. Staying involved in making the community a better place makes them well rounded citizens of the world.

The CHI St. Luke’s health, Junior Volunteer program provides a great opportunity for young men and women to experience working in a hospital environment. Junior volunteers learn customer service, leadership skills and interact with patients, visitors, and staff. They learn to take on responsibility, and think proactively.

"There are so many aspects involved in the smooth running of a hospital department! I learned so much about patient care, Inventory management, communications, and various other aspects of administering an efficient Pediatrics department. The Supervisors, Nurses and Staff at St. Luke’s were phenomenal. They really cared to answer all my questions and encouraged me to learn more. This experience was very enriching and energizing but above all, it taught me to empathize. I will definitely encourage all my friends and peers to volunteer. I am very humbled by the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ recognition, "said Mohit Talwalker, recipient of CHI St. Luke’s ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award 2014, in recognition of exemplary service and dedication.

Volunteering can help young people explore their interests. There are several wonderful ways in which one can contribute as a Junior Volunteer at St. Luke’s. Those who are interested in customer facing roles and interacting with people, there are opportunities as gift shop assistant, greeter/escort who helps with patient discharge and transports low risk patient with wheelchair. If you like computer related work or more behind the scenes job, there are opportunities for filing and clerical work. If you are interested in the field of medicine, there are opportunities to volunteer as assistants to Nurses in aspects of non-clinical patient care, restocking supplies, providing water and helping in activities with patients.
