Westfield too much for Cavaliers

SPRING, Texas -- The Westfield Mustangs stormed to a 35-7 halftime lead and coasted to an easy 49-21 victory over the College Park Cavaliers in a Region II-6A Division II bi-district football game on Friday night at Leonard George Stadium.

The Mustangs (10-1) won the District 15-6A championship and now will move on to the second round of the playoffs.

College Park, which tied Kingwood and Summer Creek for fourth in District 16-6A and advanced on point differential, ended the year 3-8.

Westfield, which is ranked No. 3 in the Houston area, jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on touchdown runs from Akpaffion Tisdel of 15 yards and Rayquan Jones of 6 yards. College Park cut the lead to 14-7 when Dominic Garcia scored on a 22-yard run with 1:23 left in the first quarter, but the Mustangs scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to grab the commanding 28-point halftime lead.

Dillon Sterling Cole hit Eric Pounce with a 32-yard scoring strike to start the onslaught, then found Tisdel with a 28-yard scoring strike at the 3:06 mark of the second period. Ed Oliver capped the three-touchdown quarter with a 1-yard run with 40 ticks left in the first half.

The Mustangs scored two third-quarter touchdowns to increase their lead to 49-7. Tisdel scored his third touchdown of the night on a 10-yard run and Jones found the end zone from two yards out.

College Park quarterback Robert Ferguson hit Greg Maxie with a 7-yard touchdown pass with 2:12 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 49-14. A.J. Sanders then scored on a 5-yard run to produce the final score.

College Park finished the game with 264 total yards, including 208 on the ground. Sanders had 143 yards rushing, while Ferguson completed 5-of-14 passes for 56 yards. The Cavaliers had only one turnover.

Westfield had 359 total yards. Cole was 6-of-9 passing for 140 yards and two scores. Jones and Tisdel also combined for 174 yards rushing.
