UPDATE:

Wunsche Brothers Café in Old Town Spring sustains considerable fire damage

The Wunsche Brothers Cafe and Saloon updated the concerned public via their Facebook page, providing a status of the 113-year old establishment and reaching out to the community in a couple of ways.

Their Facebook post read…”Just to let everyone know the addition that was added on in the mid 80's is what sustained the most damaged. The original building suffered a lot of smoke damage and we lost most of the original pictures. If anyone has any pictures they would like to donate please contact us.

The historic Wunsche Brothers Café and Saloon in Old Town Spring, which dates back to 1902, sustained significant fire damage in the early morning hours on Sunday morning, March 29. Firefighters from Spring and Montgomery County fought valiantly to save the structure, but the intense fire required a second alarm. The cause and full extent of the damage are still under investigation at this time.

One significant way the public can contribute is to the relief fund set up through Amegy Bank for the benefit of the 40 employees and their families, employed at Wunsche Brothers, who are now unemployed.

“We have approximately 40 families who now have no income coming in,” read their Facebook post. “God bless you all and please keep us in your prayers.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

SPRING, Texas - The historic Wunsche Brothers Café and Saloon in Old Town Spring went up in flames early Sunday morning, March 29, just after 3;30 a.m., and although the cause and full extent of the damage are unknown at this time, the wooden structure that dates back to 1902, has sustained a considerable amount of destruction.

Firefighters from Spring and Montgomery County fought the fire valiantly in an effort to save the town’s flagship tourist attraction, but a second alarm was called when the flames spread to a newer section of the restaurant.

Witnesses said flames spread quickly through the 2-story wooden structure. The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire; no one was in the building at the time, and no injuries were reported. Spring Today will update this story as more information is provided from the Fire Marshal’s Office.
