THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Mark Mettauer, MD, cardiovascular surgeon, has been named the “2015 Physician of the Year” at CHI St. Luke’s Health–The Woodlands Hospital.

Each year, physicians are nominated by the hospital’s management team and staff based upon their commitment to quality and excellence in healthcare, demonstrated level of patient-focused care, and leadership among their physician peers and patient care staff.

During a recent “Doctors Day” celebration, David Argueta, FACHE, President, CHI St. Luke’s Health–The Woodlands Hospital, presented Dr. Mettauer with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his clinical excellence and dedication to his patients.

“For the past 10 years, he has played an integral role in the success of the hospital’s heart program,” said Argueta. “Dr. Mettauer embodies our mission while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to providing patient-centered care. Through his leadership, dedication, and passion, CHI St. Luke’s continues to excel in the area of elite cardiovascular care.”

A former student of world-renowned physician Denton A. Cooley, MD, presently Dr. Mettauer serves as Chief of Surgery at CHI St. Luke’s Health–The Woodlands Hospital. In 2005, he conducted the first-open surgery in The Woodlands. Since that time, he has performed nearly 2,000 cases in the past five years. Aside from his numerous accolades, Dr. Mettauer’s most notable practice is his custom of praying with patients, family, and staff prior to surgeries.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized and a privilege to be a part of the CHI St. Luke’s Health family. The staff here is incredible and together, we’ve experienced tremendous growth and progress in cardiac care,” said Dr. Mettauer. “The administration shows great support for physicians, which facilitates excellence in patient care.”
