Veterans Memorial Monument dedication Memorial Day May 25

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Memorial Day, May 25, the community will have an opportunity to participate in an event for which the holiday was intended, the honoring of our military personnel, both veterans and those actively serving. At Town Green Park the historic unveiling of the Veterans Memorial Monument and “The Way Home” sculpture will take place at 4:00 p.m. The dedication is the culmination of effort by the Greater Woodlands Public Art Foundation.

“The Way Home” sculpted by the renown Edd Hayes, the “Official Texas State Sculptor,” depicts the figures of Cory Kosters and Zachary Endsley, who were both killed in the line of duty in 2007, just months apart. Their sculptures will be installed in front of a black, granite tile wall commemorating personnel in the military, in addition to emblems from each branch of military service.

“It’s our salute to their sacrifices for our freedom,” said Edd Hayes.

The Woodlands Township will coordinate the Memorial Day installation and dedication with a dignified ceremony befitting that of the heroes it will be honoring. The event will feature a Color Guard who will present the colors, patriotic music, and speakers. Veterans present will receive a commemorative challenge coin while supplies last. Light refreshments will be provided by H-E-B.

Scattered thunderstorms are predicted throughout Monday, starting before dawn, and intensifying in mid-afternoon at approximately 2:00 p.m. on through 4:00 p.m. with a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms, when the ceremony is scheduled to take place. This is a weather prediction and the timing and weather percentage possibility is subject to change, but rain is definitely in the forecast.

At this time, there has been no notification about rescheduling or postponing the dedication ceremony. The severity of the weather will be the determining factor. Stay tuned to Woodlands Online for any updated information.
