THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Facing each other for the second time this season, Conroe’s girls basketball team once again defeated the College Park Lady Cavaliers.

Conroe started off with a 5-0 lead, but two free throw shots by College Park’s Angela Wadley put a couple of points on the board for the Lady Cavaliers. The Tigerettes answered with a shot and put them up 7-2. A three point shot by Lauryn Cannady pushed the Lady Cavaliers forward, but Conroe ended the first quarter with a 14-7 lead. Jordan Allen and Erica Solomon-Powell led the Tigerettes to a huge 20 point score gap at halftime, putting them in the lead 29-9 against College Park.

Returning to the third quarter, College Park’s Jordan Rockins put the Lady Cavs back into gear with a three point shot, but Solomon-Powell helped maintain the wide gap with a couple more two point baskets. A foul put Lady Cav Jasmine Atobajeun at the free throw line, and both shots were good, and a Rockins layup brought the score to 33-17. They finished out the third quarter 38-18, Conroe.

The fourth quarter got off to a slow start with some free point throws on each side, but a Conroe steal and rebound shot picked up the pace and brought the score to 43-20. Despite a strong back-and-forth play between the two teams, the Tigerettes pulled through and defeated College Park 50-29.

With only one conference defeat under their belt and two games into the second round of district play, Conroe’s head coach Tamisha Houston said that although she worried her girls would lose their focus, she is proud of the way they’ve stepped up and handled themselves in this round.

“I’m very pleased.I was a little bit afraid that we were going to struggle struggle and that we would get a little bit relaxed, but the girls have been very good about motivating each other and they’re staying focused,” Houston said. “I continue to remind them of our situation. I keep saying what’s going on around the district so they know what we’ve done. I’m proud of them. They’re doing great.”

The Lady Cavaliers will continue their second round of district games at home against Atascocita High School Tuesday, January 26 at 7 p.m. The Tigerettes will face the Lady Highlanders at The Woodlands High School.
