BASKETBALL: Lady War Eagles end regular season with a 49-46 win over Lady Highlanders

SHENANDOAH, Texas — The Oak Ridge girls basketball team finished their regular season with a 49-46 victory over The Woodlands.

A basket, free throw and a three-pointer by Lady War Eagle Alyssa Osborne early in the first quarter put Oak Ridge ahead of The Woodlands 6-0. The Lady Highlanders would respond with some big shots, but Oak Ridge fought with a relentless defense and finished the quarter with a 16-8 lead over The Woodlands.

The Lady Highlanders stepped it up in the second quarter with a three point shot by senior point guard Meghan Musso and another shot by junior forward Luisa De La Rosa. The Woodlands put Lady War Eagle and Player of the Game LaDawn Carls at the free throw line, and two good shots put the brought the score to 20-15, Oak Ridge. The Lady Highlanders slowly began to close the gap with a three-pointer by Julia Glandt, a free-throw and two point bucket by Payton Walker, but despite some big plays, The Woodlands came up short at the end of the half with Oak Ridge leading them 26-21.

Returning to the second half, De La Rosa, Walker and Madison Morton began to turn the tables for the Lady Highlanders with a several two-pointers, but the Lady War Eagles’ Yazmine Kellough and Chelsea Cogborn helped keep their team on track with the lead and ended the third 39-31.

Two free throws and a lay up by De La Rosa and two three-pointers by Glandt picked things up for the Lady Highlanders. After being fouled during a layup, De La Rosa added three more points to the Lady Highlander’s score and put them ahead 44-40. Two free throws for Oak Ridge’s Alecia White and another two points tied the game 44-44 with a little over two minutes left in the game. Kellough put two more points on the board, putting Oak Ridge back in the lead. White got another free throw for the Lady War Eagles and left The Woodlands trailing them one point shy. Alyssa Osborne closed the game for the Oak Ridge with two free throws, and they defeated The Woodlands 49-46.

With a tough season behind them, Oak Ridge Head Coach Deidre Vasquez said she was glad for her team to finish district with a win.

“We have a good team, and we’ve been so close in so many games, and it’s so fitting that we’ve ended our season with two wins because I feel like we’ve been thrown hurdles and thrown challenges, and we learned how to fight and to persevere and be gritty,” Vasquez said. “The Woodlands is a great team, but we knew we had it in us. It’s a great way to end our season.
