THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Grand Oaks High School was the home to the battle for first place in the 13-6A district. The Woodlands Highlanders traveled across the city to face the Grand Oaks Grizzlies to see who would be at the top of the leaderboard.

The gym was electric as the stands were packed with students in their black-out shirts to support their home team. The Woodlands visitor side was also packed with parents and students supporting the other power house.

As the first set began, Grand Oaks popped off and seemed to be in rhythm from the first serve. Up 10-5, the Grizzlies were making sure to close down the Highlanders quickly but the tables turned as The Woodlands started to come back. Almost down and out The Woodlands dug their way out of a hole to tie it up at 20 late in the set. With a couple more intense rallies, The Woodlands was able to pull off a first set win.

The Woodlands would wake up in the second as they would be up in the first half of the set. Grand Oaks would also make a come back but it fell short once again and the Woodlands would take the close second set, 25-21.

Each team would dig their way out of a small deficit but as The Woodlands led the third, Grand Oaks would once again make another comeback and take the lead 22-19 late in the set. With a couple of huge rallies, digs and blocks between the two teams, Grand Oaks would end up staying alive and taking the set, 25-21.

Much like the first set Grand Oaks would once again pop off and take an early lead. Mid way through the set the momentum shifted as The Woodlands tied it up at 11. With the deafening sound of the home crowd Grand Oaks would rally up and take the fourth, forcing the fifth and final set.

As the crowd grew increasingly louder for the major rallies, each team would go point for point but Grand Oaks would tie it up at 12. The Woodlands defense would tighten up and stop the Grizzlies at home 15-13.

Arguably the best teams in the district battled it out for first place with The Woodlands coming out on top. Grand Oaks and The Woodlands are set to face each other next month, this time at The Woodlands High School. It will be another intense match up in the 13-6A district.
