THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Spring Creek Greenway Nature Center, located at 1300 Riley Fuzzel Rd. in Spring, is hosting a Birding Hike this weekend as part of its nature education series, and encourages local residents to become budding ornithologists when it comes to creating safe spaces for our avian friends.

Texas boasts a rich avian diversity, with an impressive collection of 615 documented bird species. Among them, 333 fall into the category of Nearctic-Neotropical Migratory birds, which are known for their seasonal migrations. These birds typically spend their spring and summer in North America before heading south for the winter months. Some notable examples of these migratory species include the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Purple Martin, and Eastern Kingbird, all of which are now making their way to their winter habitats in South America. However, it's important to note that not all Texas birds engage in migration; species like the Eastern Screech Owls and Cardinals are year-round residents in the state.

You can actively contribute to the well-being of these native birds by creating a bird-friendly environment in your own backyard. Here are a few simple steps you can take:

  • Plant Native Plants: Choose native plants for your garden. These plants provide essential food sources and shelter for local birds. They also support the insect population, which is a crucial part of many birds' diets.
  • Reduce Chemical Usage: Minimize the use of pesticides and herbicides in your yard. Chemicals can harm birds directly or indirectly by affecting their food sources. Opt for organic and bird-friendly gardening practices.
  • Keep Cats Indoors: If you have a pet cat, consider keeping it indoors, especially during the peak bird migration seasons. Outdoor cats can pose a significant threat to birds.

By taking these steps, you can create a welcoming and safe haven for the vibrant birdlife that shares your environment, making your backyard a valuable habitat for these colorful neighbors.
