WILLIS, TX -- 5-Star quarterback and MaxPreps National Player of the Year finalist D.J. Lagway finds himself at the center of recent rumors surrounding his upcoming signing day on Wednesday the 20th.

The rumor is based on recent moves out of College Station and the Texas A&M Aggies' pursuit of new talent under recently hired Head Coach Mike Elko.

Elko replaced the long-tenured Jimbo Fisher as the head man at A&M and witnessed a recent drop-off in commitments from high school athletes and a steady outflow of players from the program.

Sources close to the Texas A&M football program reported a face-to-face meeting between members of the Aggie coaching staff and Lagway on Monday the 11th. The names Mike Elko and Collin Klein were cited in the report, with Klein being the Aggies’ recent offensive coordinator hire.

Further speculation came from another report concerning a last-minute push from Clemson to try and flip the five-star to attend their program. Garret Riley was the primary name dropped to visit with Lagway and his family before the early signing period starting next week.

The rumors and speculation build on recent coaching moves around the college football world and the recent drop-off in production at the University of Florida.

Elko was the former head coach of the Duke University Bule Devils, where he built a successful program out of a meddling team. His move to Texas A&M promises to do much of the same to a lackluster Aggie program, along with the allure to keep the star quarterback inside Texas.

Another factor is that the Gators have not produced a winning season since Billy Napier was hired as Head Coach in 2021, and the recent decision from veteran runningback Trevor Etienne to enter the transfer portal leaves the Florida program with many question marks.

With the outside eyes peeping in and last-second pushes coming from colleges, some things are certain and will carry weight at the next level.

Lagway enters the 2024 class as the number-one quarterback prospect in Texas and the record holder for the most touchdowns in a single season at the 6A level. He has been committed to the Florida Gators since last December and will sign on Wednesday, the 20th.
