Lone Star College to host Academy for Lifelong Learning Open Houses in January

HOUSTON, TX -- Jack Camp spent nearly 40 years working in the information technology arena within the oil and gas industry. Although his retirement was not planned, Camp quickly filled his time visiting with family and exploring new interests including the Lone Star College Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL) Program.

“Lone Star College ALL Program provides access to many great topics at a very reasonable cost and it’s a great community to be involved with,” said Camp, an ALL student and instructor at LSC-CyFair. “It’s often too easy for those without ‘jobs’ to lose their connections with other people. Lone Star College ALL provides a means to build new relationships.”

The LSC ALL Program offers free and low-cost classes for retired, semi-retired and working adults aged 50 and older to help them continue to learn and grow. Current and prospective members can learn more about the program and available courses at an in-person Open House event in January.

• LSC-University Park: Tuesday, Jan. 9, 11a.m.-1 p.m.
• LSC-Montgomery: Wednesday, Jan. 10, 1-3 p.m.
• LSC-CyFair: Thursday, Jan. 11, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
• LSC-Kingwood: Friday, Jan. 12, 1-3 p.m.
• LSC-Houston North: Tuesday, Jan. 16, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
• LSC-Tomball: Wednesday, Jan. 17, 10 a.m.- noon
• LSC-North Harris: Thursday, Jan. 18, 1-3 p.m.

“The Academy for Lifelong Learning Program offers volunteer-led recreational courses and activities to expand our members’ knowledge and develop their social connections,” said Connor O’Sullivan, LSC executive director, Continuing Education.

The LSC ALL Program offers over 100 classes like arts and crafts, computer and technology, culinary arts, financial and legal planning, gardening, health and wellness, history, languages, movies, music and theater, safety, senior issues and travel to enhance lives. Annual membership (Sept. 1-Aug. 31) is $25 for access to all programming.

“The Lone Star College ALL program offers a wide variety of courses covering informational, educational and fun topics,” said Randell Dolinar, LSC-North Harris ALL member. “The program fulfills a need for intellectual stimulation, conversation and opportunity to engage with interesting people, sometimes lacking in our retirement years. Seniors are lucky to have this program available.”

Camp, who enjoys the vacation presentations led by ALL members and the history and science topics taught by LSC faculty, agrees with Dolinar on the great benefits the ALL program provides. He also stated that most members are not aware of the program benefits they can receive, encouraging them and their friends to attend an Open House.

“I find too many recently retired folks looking for ways to impact their time positively and keep their minds working,” said Camp. “I encourage them to join ALL as well as consider volunteer positions in their community.”
