THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Icy conditions forced teams to reschedule last week, but a firey level of competition was maintained by the girls basketball teams from around District 13-6A. Here are the games from this week’s schedule and the final scores for each.

1/17 New Caney vs. Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge got their week started with a road trip to New Caney in a battle between Eagles that turned into a thrashing.

The Lady War Eagles opened the game by only allowing New Caney to post 13 points in the entire first half. Meanwhile, Oak Ridge had already crossed that bridge by a lengthy margin, providing a cushiony lead that the team never relinquished. The final buzzer sounded with the Lady War Eagles finishing their demolition with a 62-37 victory.

1/17 The Woodlands vs. Conroe

Last week was tough for Conroe and the Lady Tigers, starting with a close loss on the road against The Woodlands.

Quarter-by-quarter statistics are unavailable, but a victory margin of 51-47 in the Lady Highlanders’ favor provides a glimpse at how hard both teams fought for the win. The win does more than increase the win column for The Woodlands, as it continues to keep the pressure on Conroe to win games down the stretch should the Lady Highlanders attempt to jump into the playoffs.

1/17 Willis vs. Grand Oaks

Grand Oaks kept their hopes up for a chance of claiming the district title with their dazzling display against the Willis Ladykats on Wednesday.

A dominant opening quarter saw Willis score a single basket’s worth of points, giving the Lady Grizzlies the window to run away with the game. Willis struggled against the oppressive Lady Grizzly defense and a brutally effective offense that chased in opportunities at will. The effecient prowess of Grand Oaks continued to the closing minutes, ending with a resounding 64-28 win on the road.

1/17 Caney Creek vs. Cleveland

A winless season for Cleveland did not find any reprieve against the Lady Panthers on Wednesday, as Caney Creek looked to cash in its third win of district play.

Both teams opened with a strong showing in the first half, keeping the teams tied at the hip, with Caney Creek maintaining a slight edge. A gradual process of building the lead was the key to success for the Lady Panthers, who ended the night with a well-earned 56-38 win.

1/19 College Park vs. Caney Creek

Unfortunately for Caney Creek, their upward momentum was short-lived due to a tough matchup against the Lady Cavaliers.

Despite this being their only game of the week, College Park came out hot against the Lady Panthers. The Lady Cavs’ defense held Caney Creek to single-digit scoring every quarter, providing an opportunity for the team to score at their leisure. While not the best scoring night for College Park, a steady lead was grown and taken to the final buzzer. The defensive showcase ended with the Lady Cavaliers taking a 46-22 win that keeps them sitting at third in the standings.

1/19 Grand Oaks vs. The Woodlands

The Lady Grizzlies attempted to parlay their success earlier in the week into a win against the Lady Highlanders in a matchup that turned into an all-out war.

Things seemed to be going Grand Oaks’ way for the first three quarters, taking a comfortable lead into the final stretch with the counter-effort from The Woodlands being mitigated at every point. But, an intense closing quarter from the Lady Highlanders tied the teams as the final buzzer sounded, necessitating overtime. In the intensity of the moment, the Lady Grizzlies stepped up to the occasion by barely out-scoring their opponents in the extra period. The final score after overtime was 54-51 Grand Oaks, with a date set up against Oak Ridge to decide the district’s top team.

1/19 Conroe vs. Oak Ridge

Ahead of their matchup with rivals Grand Oaks, the Lady War Eagles were tasked with taking down the scrappy Conroe Lady Tigers on the road.

Quarter-by-quarter scores are again unavailable, but a second potential scare for Oak Ridge was brewing before the overwhelming might of the team came into play. The Lady War Eagles managed to escape with a 33-27 victory over Conroe, but a sharper version of the team will need to be present if they hope to secure their grasp on the district’s top spot.

1/19 Cleveland vs. Willis

The final game of the week saw Willis extend Cleveland’s misery by giving them another loss to extend the winless season for the Lady Indians.

Quarter-by-quarter stats are unavailable, but a 58-50 win for the Ladykats showed signs of a sizable fight from Cleveland that may have had a chance at securing their first win of the season. Unfortunately for them, Willis had other plans that included staying away from the bottom of the district standings, which was done with the win.
