Baseball roundup: Oak Ridge holds off College Park

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The seventh-inning rally by the Oak Ridge High School baseball team was one run better than that of the College Park High School baseball team. And that was the difference in the War Eagles’ 4-3 win over the Cavaliers on Thursday at The Diamonds at College Park.

Hope slam propels Highlanders


Oak Ridge broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the top half of the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead. But College Park fought back in its District 14-5A opener with two runs, forcing the exit of War Eagles starting and winning pitcher Tyler Shumpert (seven strikeouts), who was one out away from pitching a complete game.

Oak Ridge reliever Marshall Kasowski saved it, getting the final out while stranding Cavaliers potential tying and winning runs on second and third base.

David Ellingson pitched well for College Park, going 6 1/3 innings and striking out nine.

Riley McKnight paced Oak Ridge with a double, single and an RBI. Kasowski doubled and drove in a run while Alex Walker and Brandon Navarro added a hit apiece. Luken Baker added an RBI.

College Park outhit Oak Ridge 7-6. All seven Cavaliers’ hits were singles. Noah Vaughan and Nate Fisbeck collected two apiece while Tyler Vaughan, Justen Heinrich and Connor Weaverling added one each.

The Cavaliers (7-11, 0-1) play at 7 p.m. Friday at Conroe, which defeated Bryan 5-1 on Thursday.

Oak Ridge (11-6, 2-0) hosts Conroe at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Woodlands High School baseball team, ranked No. 3 in the nation by “Baseball America,” remained undefeated for the 2013 season after a 13-2 win at A&M Consolidated on Thursday.

Carter Hope was one of three Highlanders to hit home runs in the game. Hope blasted a grand slam homer highlighting an eight-run third inning. He also doubled as The Woodlands improved to 15-0 for the season, including a 2-0 record in District 14-5A play.

Alex Dunlap and Chris Andritsos also homered. Both drove in two runs. Andritsos cruised through a five-inning two-hitter, striking out seven.

Charlie Warren had two hits and drove in a run while Josh Shaw added a hit and an RBI. Brandon Manger also drove in a run.

The Highlanders host Bryan at 7 p.m. Friday at Scotland Yard.
