THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Woodlands High School baseball team will have to put off for another day its celebration for clinching the District 14-5A championship. That opportunity was postponed on Friday when the College Park High School baseball team earned a 3-2 win at Scotland Yard.

Tyler Vaughan belted a second-inning solo homer and David Ellingson drove in run and threw a brilliant complete-game three-hitter against a Highlanders team that came in averaging more than nine runs per district game this season.

Ellingson was working on a one-hit shutout when the Highlanders struck for two sixth-inning runs in answer to the Cavaliers’ two-run sixth that extended its lead to 3-0.

The Woodlands ace Ryan Burnett pitched well enough to win, although it wasn’t his best outing of the season. A fired up Cavaliers team made solid contact on a consistent basis off The Woodlands’ left-hander.

“That's why they call it a rivalry! Never know what to expect,” Burnett tweeted after the game.

Dakota Parsons delivered two of College Park’s six hits. Noah Vaughan and Tyler Mortenson added the others.

Charlie Warren doubled and drove in a run for the Highlanders while Alex Dunlap (RBI) and Hillin Warren added a hit apiece.

The Woodlands (24-3, 9-1) still hold a commanding 2 ½ game lead over second-place Oak Ridge (14-9, 6-3), which defeated Conroe 10-5 on Friday. The Highlanders can clinch the district title on when they visit the War Eagles at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

College Park (14-15, 5-4), which pulled into a virtual tie with A&M Consolidated (13-12, 5-4) for third place, hosts Lufkin (13-10, 3-6) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at The Diamonds at College Park. Lufkin fell 4-1 to Bryan (11-14, 4-6) on Friday.

Oak Ridge 10 Conroe 5

Brandon Navarro and Luken Baker delivered three hits each while Joey Barille added a hit and three RBI in the War Eagles’ win at Conroe on Tuesday. Gavin Grissom added two of Oak Ridge’s 12 hits. Alex Walker, Marshall Kasowski and Riley McKnight added one hit each.

Tyler Shumpert picked up the win with five innings of one-hit relief work, striking out five.
