Conroe ISD Campus Updates: March 26 - April 1

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The following are Conroe ISD campus updates for March 26 - April 1.

Academy of Science & Technology

The Distinguished Lecture Series continues in March with two lectures. All lectures are from 6-7 p.m. and are open to the public.

On April 8, Scott Tann Perspectives of the Agrochemicals Industry in Light of Recent Anti-GMO Activity will visit. Our FIRST Robotics Team earned the Chairman's Award at the recent Dallas Regional. This award is presented to the team judged to have created the best partnership effort among team participants and which best exemplified the true meaning of FIRST through measurable impact on its participants, school and community. The award was created to keep the central focus of FRC on transforming the culture that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology as well as encouraging more of today's youth to become scientists, engineers and technologists. Congratulations to Vaishu Kishore, Chase Noren, and Matthew Bartell for their work on the Chairman's Award. The team will compete in the Lone Star Regional April 4-6 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The event is open and free to the public. Junior Berrill Behrens along with College Park students Julienna Law and Miranda Rhett created the winning video for the Milstead Automotive Anti-Distracted Driving Video Ambassador contest. The girls received $500 in prize money and will be Ambassadors for a year participating in various events to further the community initiative named “Lipsticks and Dipsticks” which seeks to educate students about driving and car management. Birnham Woods Elementary School

Spirit Sticks will be on sale in the cafeteria the morning of Wednesday, March 26 from 7:20-7:45 a.m. and are filled on a first come first serve basis. Parents are welcome to accompany their child. Pre-order forms will be sent home in advance for those who have a favorite spirit stick in mind.

Thursday, March 27 will kick off the Third Grade Open House at 6 p.m. followed by the Third Grade “Rock and Roll Forever” Program at 7 p.m.

Fourth Grade STARR testing will begin Tuesday, April 1. The campus will be closed to visitors. All parents are being asked to refrain from entering the building which includes eating lunch with students. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The cold weather seems to be ending as the Lost and Found bin is almost full again. All Lost and Found clothing items are being donated at the end of March. Please feel free to come in at any time to look for your child's belongings.

Broadway Elementary School

Spring pictures will take place on Wednesday, March 26 throughout the day.

The evening of March 26 Broadway will have Spirit Night at the Fuddruckers located off of Grogans Mill from 6-8 p.m.

Our A Honor roll breakfast and Walk of Fame will be celebrated on Friday, April 4.

Buckalew Elementary School

Congratulations to the following students who received a “Principal's Award” medallion for demonstrating our Keys to Success: Ira Kadam, Jake Dorsett, Lena Krstic, Will Laurence, Isabella Llaguno, Kathryn McNight, Molly Rafferty, Nithya Shanmugam, Avery Warren, and Andy Weaver.

On March 26, Mr. William Kelly will present information about the STAAR test and how it impacts your child. The presentation will be held at Galatas Elementary in the activity room at 10 a.m.

The Spring Choir Concert will be on March 27 at 6:30 p.m. The choir has been working very hard and sound fantastic – don't miss it!

The annual Spring Book Fair will take place 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. April 11 and April 14-16. The fair will be open late for family shopping from 2:45 – 6 p.m. on April 10. There will be hundreds of books to choose from, including new favorites, old classics and Bluebonnets. Please come and support Buckalew and your family's love for reading! This year there will also be an On-Line Bookfair: The Online Book Fair will be open April 1-20. Purchases made online should arrive at the school on April 28-29. There are about 1000 more titles online than are available at the school. Be sure to take a look!

Bush Elementary School

On Thursday, March 27 the first grade students will be going on a field trip to the Oil Ranch.

The kindergarten program “Happy, Healthy, TOTALLY!” will be on Thursday, March 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym.

On Friday, March 28 report cards will be sent home with students.

The campus will be closed to all visitors March 31-April 4 due to STAAR testing.

Collins Intermediate School

March 25 at 3 p.m. will be the fifth grade Colossal Cobra Awards.

April 14 at 1:15 p.m. will be the next PTO Meeting.

Deretchin K-6 School

Principal Proud will be held on March 28 at 8:15 a.m. in the cafeteria. Congratulations to all students and thank you for being such wonderful citizens at Deretchin.

The CISD honor choir will perform on March 29.

April 1 is the STAAR exam for both fourth and fifth grade. Our fourth grade students will be taking part 1 of the Writing exam and our fifth grade students will be taking their Math exam. Good luck to all students!

Ford Elementary School

Our second annual Boosterthon Fundraiser Kickoff was held with an exciting pep rally. Boosterthon stresses physical fitness, along with fun character education activities. Students will raise pledges for the Boosterthon Fun Run on March 26. This event helps earn money to purchase instructional materials and technology hardware and software. Please consider sponsoring a Ford Falcon as they look forward to this fun-filled day.

Spring pictures will be taken on March 27.

First grade field trip to 7 Acre Woods will be take place on March 28.

Galatas Elementary School

CISD speaker William Kelly will present information on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and what the results mean for students, schools, and the school district. The presentation will be held on March 26 at 10 a.m. in the Galatas activity room. A question and answer session will follow.

Campus will be closed to all visitors March 31 through April 4 due to testing. Fourth grade students will take the STARR Writing test on April 1 and 2.

Giesinger Elementary School

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the library from March 24 through March 28. The hours are: 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday the fair will close at noon.

Donuts with Dudes will be held in the cafeteria on Wednesday, March 26, from 7:30 a.m. until 8 a.m. The book fair will be open during Donuts with Dudes.

The school carnival will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Glen Loch Elementary School

Art Night will be held at Glen Loch Elementary on Monday March 31 from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. Come and create art with your student.

The Parent Teacher Organization Flea Market will be held at McCullough Junior High School on Saturday March 29 from 8 am until 12 p.m.

The Parent Teacher Organization is selling personalized bricks as an ongoing fund raiser. Buy a brick and be part of school history. Please continue to drop off your plastic shopping bags for our recycling collection.

Plastic bag recycling bins are located just inside the front doors.

Hailey Elementary School

Faculty and parents will recognize one student from each class during a presentation of “Spotlight on Caring” Wednesday, March 26. The students were selected based on their demonstration of caring behavior toward others. Congratulations to these students!

March 28 is the Hailey Family Fun Carnival at 5:30-8:30 p.m. There will be many activities including bingo, games, cake walk, bounce house and slide, D.J., kids' raffle, silent auction, food court, and much more! In advance of the carnival, families are asked to donate silent auction items, 2-liter sodas, baked goods, and volunteer time to work at the various games and activities. Please contact the school for more information or to sign up as a volunteer. Prior to the carnival, raffle tickets are available at all lunch periods for $1.00 each. Each raffle ticket gives the student a chance to win exciting prizes including an electric scooter, IPod Touch, IPad Mini, giant teddy bear, and Rainbow Loom set.

Tuesday and Wednesday, April 1 and 2, are STAAR Writing testing days for fourth graders. Please ensure that your child gets a good night's sleep each night before the test and eats a good breakfast each morning. Our students are well-prepared and we are proud of their hard work! We will have a closed campus to parents and visitors on these state testing days.

Students are encouraged to bring aluminum cans for recycling every Friday for the Cash for Cans program.

Houser Elementary School

The Pennies for Patients Campaign was a huge success for raising awareness and funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Houser Elementary raised $1,076.00 in honor of their students who is a cancer survivor, Desiree Montemayor.

Kindergarten Field Trip to the Children's Museum of The Woodlands on Monday, March 24.

First Grade Program is Thursday, March 27 at 7 p.m.

Irons Junior High School

This past Tuesday, March 18, Irons competed in the District UIL Academic Competition that was held at York Junior High School.

Mrs. Pousson wants to recognize her UIL students for all their hard work in the UIL Modern Oratory competition. Seventh grader, Toby Smith won the fifth place ribbon. Eighth grader, Adrianna Vega won the First Place medal.

Mrs. Willeford is proud of Kylee Vear for placing second in the eigth grade category for for UIL Art Academics.

Ms. Richard is proud of the following students who competed in the UIL Mathematics competition. Seventh graders, Micaela Badger won a fourth Place ribbon and Madeline Kissner won a sixth Place ribbon. Eighth grader, Kyle Ward won a fifth Place ribbon.

Mrs. Daugherty is proud of Mia Vu and Zach Twilla for placing fifth overall for UIL Impromptu Speaking.

Ms. Riley is very proud of her students who competed in the UIL Oral Reading Competition. Eighth graders, Tyler James earned a fifth place ribbon while Alaycia Smith earned a fourth place ribbon.

Coach Ramirez is proud of his students who competed in the UIL Maps, Charts and Graphs Competition. Seventh grader, Logan Letney earned a first place medal. Eighth grader, Kaitlin Stevens also earned a first place medal.

Mrs. Grimes is proud of her students who competed in the UIL Science competition. Seventh grader, Jacob Martin, and eighth grader, Sanjana Ramchandran, both earned a fourth place ribbon.

Kaufman Elementary School

Students will be redeeming their AR points for prizes during the third nine weeks AR store, March 24 – 28.

Tuesday, April 1, fourth graders will be taking the STAAR writing exam.

Knox Junior High School

Awards given at the 2014 Engineering Design Competiton include the following: Most Unique Design – First place, Knight Hawks, team members Karl Haas, Braden Kupfer, Mac Rodrick); second place, The Metal Benders, team members Bronson Sansoni, Austin Sisson, Hestin Clark-Yeager; third place, Rover, team members Maaz Syed, John Raley, Matt Chester. Most Photogenic – second place, Knight Hawks, team members Karl Haas, Braden Kupfer, Mac Rodrick. Top Vehicle – First place, The Firebirds, team members Houston Hakala, Alex Kremer; third place, Robo Team, team members Joe Turco, John Depadova, Jacob Davis. Top Gun Award – The Firebirds, team members Houston Hakala and Alex Kremer.

Lady Knights Soccer tryouts will be March 27 and 28 beginning at 6:45 a.m. until 8:10 a.m. Students must have a physical on file to try out.

Boy's soccer tryouts will be March 27 and 28. Please see Coach Payne for more information.

Tennis tryouts will take place on March 27 and 28. Boys will tryout Thursday, March 27 from 4-5:30 p.m. Girls will tryout Friday, March 28 from 4-5:30 p.m. In order to tryout you must have a physical on file.

Students interested in Art Acceleration at College Park for the 2014-2015 school year are required to take a test and submit a portfolio for this program. April 21 is the deadline to submit your portfolio. For more information please see Ms. Lunsford in Portable I.

Lamar Elementary School

Report cards will be sent home on March 27.

Fourth grade STAAR Writing is on April 1. We will have a closed campus that day.

McCullough Junior High School

The Language Arts Department is offering free test prep help for the STAAR Reading and Writing tests before school from 8:10 to 8:30 a.m. Students are invited to come as often as they can, and remember you are not behind if you have to miss a day. The Reading STAAR test prep will be in room B200, and the Writing STAAR test prep will be in room B218. These skills will help you on every test you take, for life.

McCullough art student, Isabella Le, was honored at the Bob Bullock History Museum in Austin by the Texas Art Education Association during their annual Youth Art Month Exhibit. School Districts from all over the state are invited to submit works of art and from all the entries the top 100 are selected to be exhibited. Isabella was one of three CISD art students to be honored. Dorothy Nie, a seventh grade art student, won Best in Show at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo. Her work is currently on exhibit at the Hayloft Gallery at Reliant Stadium.

Cheerleaders for the 2014-2015 Cheerleading squads were announced. The eighth grade cheerleaders are Haley Arendes, Payton Carrow, Karolyne Day, Shelly Harper, Bethany Hopkins, Grace Ann Hopkins, Kathryn Falterman, Hunter Faust, Nora Jones, Anna Cat Jordan, Amber Krizan, Breeanne Melton, Brooklyn Newell, Maddie Schroder, Holly Sukalski, Haven Tice, Hope Tucker, Madison Verhalen, Hannah Williams, Natalie Williams, and Logan Wood. The seventh grade squad members are Andrea Allizadeth, Hannah Barrett, Maggie Bell, Camille Brooks, Caitlin Charbonneau, Alyson Craft, Ella Cox, Kennedy Croom, Ellena Flaskamp, Reagan Fox, Madison Grotberg, Kassedy Hudson, Macey Johnson, Elise Ledoux, Avery Markle, Olivia McMullin, Grayson Mills, Madelyn Mize, Audrey Packer, and Abbey Schroder.

Powell Elementary School

We will be having closed campus beginning Monday, March 31 through Thursday, April 3, due to STAAR testing.

Snyder Elementary School

We are so excited for our first graders who will be presenting their "First Grade Texas Literature Cafe" information to parents on March 27. Please join us at 6 p.m., followed by rodeo dancing at 7 p.m. You won't want to miss it!

Report cards for the third 9 weeks will go home on Friday March 28.

We will honor our Stallion Standouts for the month of March on Friday, March 28.

Tough K-6 School

The Coulson Tough Spring Book fair will take place from March 24-27. Now is a great time to purchase those books for summer reading. Please stop by and see the great selection of books.

The Coulson Tough student council is still collecting new and gently used books for Mother Hubbard's Cupboard. The books that are collected will be shared with the students at Armstrong Elementary in Conroe.

Third and sixth graders at Coulson Tough are collecting items through the end of the month for the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. Items needed include blankets, towels, blue Dawn dishwashing liquid, cat litter, canned dog and cat food, and toys for dogs and cats. Donations can be dropped off in the Coulson Tough front office.

Wilkerson Intermediate School

Tuesday night, March 25 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. is Chick-fil-a spirit night at the 720 Sawdust Road location. Hope to see you all there. Go Wildcats!

Friday, March 28 is a special treat for our sixth graders. There will be a BMX show and Kona ice will be on campus.

Report cards go home in the Tuesday/Newsday folders April 1.

We will observe a closed campus Tuesday and Wednesday, April 1 and April 2 for STAAR testing.

Tuesday is fifth grade Math and Wednesday is fifth grade Reading.

April 3 is spring picture day. Order forms will be coming home shortly.

York Junior High School

Drill team tryout clinic will be from 5-6:30 p.m. Those wanting to try out for Officers will have a clinic from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tryouts will be on March 28 at 4:30 p.m.

Tennis tryouts will be March 26 for boys and March 27 for girls. The tryouts will be from 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. Students must have a physical on file in order to try-out. Please see Coach Dunn for more information.

Boys’ Soccer tryouts will be March 27 and March 28 from 3:50 to 5:10 p.m. You must have a physical on file to tryout. See Coach Armstrong for more information.

Girls’ Soccer tryouts will be held March 26 at 7:30 a.m. and then on March 26, 27, and 28 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. You must have a physical on file to try-out. Please see Ms. Stinson for more information.

PTO is accepting nominations for all positions on the PTO Board for the upcoming school year. Forms are available in the front office. They are due by April 1.
