THE WOODLANDS, TX – Few students look forward to the hours spent bubbling in scantrons with No. 2 pencils for standardized tests.

While parents cannot be in the classroom to help, there are several steps they can take in advance of the test to make the experience better for their children -- whether preparing for the STAAR or the SATs.

The owners of local LearningRx centers are here to help. The brain-training businesses are focused on improving success in school.

Kim Bellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx, said the first thing parents can do for their children is to research the test. “Take some time to read about the test, find example questions online and talk to your kids about what to expect,” she said. “Sometimes, reminding them that they already have skills can help them build confidence and increase test scores.”

Students can try a sample test and see how well they do, Bellini added. “Practice with your child and talk them through some of the challenging questions,” she suggested.

Bellini said it is always important that students get plenty of sleep before the test. The next morning, the recipe for success includes a healthy breakfast. “Minimize sugar and carbohydrates and make sure the meal includes protein to help keep energy stable for a longer period of time,” she said.

Finding new ways to strengthen cognitive ability is a specialty of The Woodlands LearningRx.
