ORIGINAL STORY:

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - On Tuesday, March 31, The Woodlands High School Improv Troupe will be using their theatrical talent and comedic wit to entertain the audience, while raising money for a local community member.

Ticket sales and donations raised at the event on Tuesday will benefit Brooklyn Brumfield, a resident who has been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a very rare genetic disease. The funds raised at the event will go towards her treatments and physical therapy, as well as the modifications needed for the family's home. Keith Brumfield, Brooklyn’s father, is well known in The Woodlands community. Not only is he a theatre teacher at McCullough Junior High, but he is also the founder of Class Act Productions. Class Act Productions is a non-profit organization where local youth participate in musical productions, theatre classes, workshops and summer camps. In fact, many of the students involved with the TWHS Improv Troupe personally know Mr. Brumfield.

“A lot of the kids have been involved with Class Act and have had Brumfeld as a teacher,” said Matthew Peters, theatre teacher at TWHS. “I think for the kids it’s a lot more special because its someone they know. We are excited that we are able to do something like this and give back to Mr. Brumfield who has given so much to the community.”

Since 2014, members of The Woodlands High School Improv Troupe have put on a performance each month, with the proceeds going to a particular organization or charity. The troupe, made of 16 high school students and led by TWHS theatre teacher, Matthew Peters, performs skits and different games in front of a live audience, similar to the hit television show, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. During each show, the students entertain the audience through family-friendly improvisational theatre, where the dialogue, actions and characters are not scripted, but are instead formed as the improvisation happens in present time. A special addition to this month’s performance is that eight McCullough Junior High students will be performing with the troupe.

“I went in and chose eight students to come in and learn how to do improv and perform with us,” said Peters. “I think as a middle school kid, performing with high school students is always really cool. Performing for a high school crowd is exciting for them and hopefully they can continue performing on the TWHS stage in the future. It is great because we are able to give those kids that experience so that they feel more comfortable before they get to the high school level.”

The improv show on March 31 will start at 7 pm in the TWHS senior campus theatre, located at 6101 Research Forest Drive. Tickets are $5, but extra donations are always encouraged.

The TWHS Improv Troupe will be entertaining for the enjoyment of the audience while raising funds for a local resident. The troupe not only gets to do what they love, but they make a difference while doing it.
