MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - The rainy forecast the next couple of days and as the hurricane season approaches, it’s time to hope for the best but plan for the worst. Prepare a pet emergency kit and include the following essential items to get your pets through whatever Mother Nature sends your way. The Humane Society of Montgomery County recommends the following:

  • At least 3 days of food in an airtight, waterproof container
  • At least 3 days of water specifically for your pets
  • Medicines and medical records in a waterproof container
  • Pet first aid kit - Include cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves; isopropyl alcohol and saline solution.
  • Collar or harness with ID tag and a leash
  • Important documents such as your pet’s registration information, adoption papers, vaccination documents, and medical records in a clean plastic bag or waterproof container.
  • Pet carrier
  • Sanitation needs - Pet litter and litter box if needed, newspaper, paper towels, plastic trash bags, and household chlorine bleach. To purify water in an emergency add eight drops of bleach per gallon of water, stir and let stand for 30 minutes before use. Do not use scented or color safe bleaches.
  • A picture of you and your pet together
  • Familiar items - Toys, treats, or bedding to reduce your pet’s stress
  • Emergency contact Information for local animal control agencies and veterinary hospitals
  • Develop a buddy system with neighbors, friends, or relatives.
