THE WOODLANDS, TX – Ten years ago, husband and wife team Troy and Amy Tice took a family situation and turned it into a career path designed to help the elderly live on their own terms with dignity. The result was Amada Senior Care, a Woodlands-based business celebrating its first decade of operations.

“Amy’s grandmother needed help as she aged, and we saw that there were no valuable resources available to assist her and us,” said Troy. “So Amy and I decided to take matters into our own hands and create a business to fill the need.”

Troy grew up in The Woodlands all through his primary and secondary education years. He was in another industry at the time of his wife’s grandmother’s need, and was successful enough there that he could readily choose his second career path.

“In those early days, Amy even did shifts herself as we opened our first offices in a rented space,” said Troy. Today, Amada is headquartered at 286 Ed English Drive, Building 8, Suite A, in Shenandoah. Their phone lines are answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Any fears that there would be no clientele for the Tices’ business quickly dissipated. “The elderly need help, and the number of elderly is growing each year as people live longer.” The answer was a series of customized solutions presented to the entire family of the clients in question. “We specialize in caregivers, but half of what we do is educate people,” said Troy. “Nine out of ten times when we meet a family and they are frustrated and feeling helpless, we end our session with hugs. And we always ask them, ‘Are you breathing easier now?’”

The business model of Amada is allowing seniors to ‘age in place,’ allowing them to live in their current residences on their own terms by providing caregivers who can help them with everything from daily tasks to transportation to meal preparation and enhanced elderly care.

“Amada is licensed and insured. We only hire the best caregivers – we currently have 135 employees; all of them are employees, none of them contract. Our caregivers are experienced and thoroughly background-checked,” said Troy. The caregivers are utilized for only as long as they are needed; some elderly may need an in-home presence once or twice a week, some may need help returning home from a hospital visit, some may want to be taken out for a lunch or to run errands, some may need near-constant care.

“Our allegiance is to the families,” said Troy. “We’re here to solve problems, not create headaches. My caregivers are an actual team of total rock stars; we’ve built an atmosphere where we’re doing the Lord’s work, and we pride ourselves on this.”

Like many businesses, Amada was affected by the pandemic; in fact, approximately half of the local businesses in the industry shut down in its aftermath, and many of those that survived did so by adding minimum requirements to the length of the agreements. Amada is opposed to having families commit to more than what is required. “Give us a chance by showing you what we can do with one shift,” said Troy.

The Tices enjoy their home and work lives in The Woodlands. “It’s a vibrant community here, with everything going for it; the resources are here to take care of things as you get older,” said Troy. “This is the community I grew up in and that my family lived in. Our kids went to school here, our parents live in the area, and I feel it’s our responsibility to take care of our seniors and make sure they are safe and secure in every environment.”

Along with a strong sense of community, Amada, its owners, and its staff are staunch supporters of First Responders and military veterans, and recently became an approved network partner for the Veterans Administration to be able to provide care for our veterans.

“I want what we offer to be so much of a community benefit,” said Troy. “The passion we have is real. And if we can share it with others, then we’ll have been a complete success.”
