THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) will celebrate its tenth year Walking in The Woodlands this fall. The Light The Night® Walk is a powerful fundraising event, which brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those that lost their battles.

Light The Night Walk Kickoff Dinner set for August 21

LLS will host a Kickoff Celebration Dinner at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 21 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Over 430 guests are expected.

Radio personality Dana Tyson will emcee the program, featuring honored hero Sophie Long, 25-year-old lymphoma survivor. Other speakers include longtime LLS volunteers, Barry Blanton, Kent Bratsch and Tina Daugherty. Each speaker has been personally touched by blood cancers - Blanton is a lymphoma survivor, Bratsch participates in honor of his son, Noah, a leukemia survivor, and Daugherty lost her daughter, Jennifer, to the disease.

The program’s message is that anyone young and old can have maximum impact on the LLS mission to find cures and improve the quality of life for blood cancer patients and their families.
LLS is determined to make a difference, today. Thanks to nationwide participation in these walks, LLS has been able to invest more than a billion dollars into research to advance breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today. Despite advances in survival rates, about half of blood cancer patients do not survive, so more funding is needed.

The Walk has grown tremendously since the first year, which raised $30,000. Since then, the Montgomery County community has collectively raised $2.5 million through Light The Night. In 2013, the Montgomery County Walk raised over $465,000. Corporate Walk Chair Fawn Creighton, CEO of Apollo Hospital, and the Executive Leadership Committee look to surpass $535,000 raised in 2014.

The Walk is scheduled for November 2, 2014 at Market Street in The Woodlands. Festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. and will include live music, children’s activities, food and family fun. The Walk will follow at 6:30 p.m.
