HOUSTON, Texas - Self-sabotage knows no boundaries, no wealth gap and no class or gender distinction. From comedian Bill Cosby to former Enron CEO Ken Lay to your alcoholic neighbor, daily headlines remind us of myriad personal and professional implosions.

Dr. John Demartini reveals what causes self-sabotage and how to avoid its traps.

One man who was on that very same self-sabotaging path was John Demartini. An illiterate high school dropout, he found himself homeless, friendless, penniless and on a path leading to no good future. Then, in a confluence of events that some have likened to divine intervention, Demartini encountered a man who would become his mentor and help turn his life around. Today, Dr. Demartini is an internationally renowned speaker, human behavior specialist, popular presenter, bestselling author and eminent educator who now 'pays it forward' by passing on what he has learned on his journey to success to audiences worldwide.

Having once been there himself, Demartini pursued the questions he and so many others have asked, such as, 'Why do people thwart themselves? What causes people's lives to implode in chaos and self-destruction?' In his 'spiritual turnaround' during this journey, he found answers to these questions, marveling at how easily some self-awareness could prevent people from self-implosion.

The three basic reasons people fall victim to self-sabotage are:

They are setting goals that are not in their values, but instead values projected onto them by other individuals. 'In other words, they are subordinating to a perceived higher authority,' he said. 'By placing your values over those of others, and setting your goals to correspond with those self-set values, you significantly lessen the chance of sabotaging your own efforts.'

They are responding to an unconscious agenda because it is not what they truly want; instead, they are only trying to please others. 'We tend to crave approval and acceptance,' he said. 'Our agenda should be our own. There is nothing wrong in asking yourself what you want; it is not selfish. On the contrary, by setting an agenda that puts your own wants first, you have a more open mind and a more selfless journey.'

They are in a state of disempowerment. 'Those who cede their power to others are in danger of self-imploding under the weight of the wants, needs and agendas of those others,' he said. 'By being empowered, you instead have the strength to resist what they wish to impose on you.'

Demartini teaches that the challenges we face are intentional - they are here for equilibrium and they are never mistakes. Humans are destined to experience both pain and pleasure. Awareness of this keeps individuals balanced and poised in gratitude and appreciation for their self, life, career and those people around them.

His experience working in human behavior has shown him it's the people who try to please you who actually foster more dependence and childishness in you, but the people who challenge you, who are even mean to you and unconcerned for your pleasure, are the ones who genuinely contribute to your self-determination and maturity. 'If you only experience support without challenge, know you are digging your own grave and will never know what knocked you down flat and led you to becoming your own worst enemy,' said Demartini.
