THE WOODLANDS, Texas - In 1985, a health campaign was started throughout the month of October each year to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Known as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the hope is to find treatments and a cure for breast cancer, while also providing support for those affected by the most common cancer among women.

For women who have survived breast cancer or who are currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, the road to recovery can be scary, emotional and stressful, but one plastic surgeon focuses his practice on showing women that there is life after the disease. Dr. Kyle Gordley, M.D., F.A.C.S, of Gordley Plastic Surgery, primarily focuses on the surgical restoration of the breast for both breast cancer patients and survivors.

“I think it helps them provide some closure, like a bookend on breast cancer,” said Dr. Gordley. “It gives a sense of normalcy in a way that a prosthetic never could.”

Breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is becoming more and more popular, and Dr. Gordley creates an individualized plan for each patient so that they have the best outcome and are able to live their lives to the fullest after breast cancer. With three basic options for breast reconstruction, Dr. Gordley makes sure that each reconstruction is tailored to that individual patient.

“Everybody’s situation is different, and so you have to look at everything and sort of compile their history, their cancer, and their body type to try to find a solution.”

Obtaining his Bachelor of Science at Texas A&M University, Dr. Gordley went on to attend The University of Texas—Southwestern Medical Center where he received his Doctorate of Medicine, later completing his Plastic Surgery Residency at the Baylor College of Medicine.

For Dr. Gordley, his passion for helping breast cancer patients and survivors extends past the operating room. After personally witnessing many women diagnosed with breast cancer struggle to find the best treatments options, he made a goal of helping women as much as possible during their difficult journey. For someone who has had breast cancer, something as simple as looking in the mirror or wearing bathing suits can be painful and difficult, and Dr. Gordley’s goal is to make breast cancer survivors feel comfortable in their own skin again, enhancing their quality of life.

In most cases, Dr. Gordley will meet with the patients before they undergo the mastectomy. This is so a plan can be made and will increase the chances of a better outcome for the breast reconstruction surgery.

“A lot of times, if we can get to it before they have their mastectomy, it has a better outcome. We want to meet with the patients as soon as possible,” explained Dr. Gordley.

Although Dr. Gordley works with patients who have or have had breast cancer, he also stresses the importance of mammograms in order to prevent or detect the cancer at an early stage. An X-ray image of breasts used to screen breast cancer, mammograms can decrease deaths caused by the disease by catching it in the early stages. For women 40 and older, it is recommended that they have a mammogram every one to two years. Dr. Gordley was also sure to mention the newest technology in breast cancer detection: 3D mammography. 3D mammograms are not only more accurate and detailed, but patients also have little to no discomfort during the process.

At Gordley Plastic Surgery, Dr. Gordley and his staff work tirelessly to make women’s lives whole again after breast cancer. With proven results, great outcomes, and an array of positive testimonials, Gordley Plastic Surgery is the place to go for breast reconstruction and aesthetic procedures.
