2024 Willis Wildkat Football Team

It was the season of all seasons for the Wildkats in 2023 behind the accomplishments of sensational quarterback play, highlight-reel-worthy moments from skill players, and bone-shattering play from the big men and defenders.

Leading Head Coach Trent Miller's squad was Senior sensation D.J. Lagway. After injuries sidelined Lagway during his Junior year, he returned with a vengeance on his path to becoming one of the greatest High School Quarterbacks in Texas history.

Thanks to reliable protection from his line and jaw-dropping play from his skilled teammates, Lagway was able to set Willis' 2023 schedule on fire, winning their games by an average of 36.6 points. Their closest competition were The Woodlands Highlanders, but an excellent performance from Lagway gave the team the push it needed to finish the year unbeaten, marking the most wins in a season in Willis High School History.

After the regular season concluded, the train did not stop for the Wildkats. Their first two playoff games were blowout wins over Aldine Nimitz and Tomball Memorial, but a matchup against DeSoto in the Alamodome spelled disaster for the team. Despite their continued fight, Willis' historic run ended in a 31-65 loss to the eventual State Champion Eagles.

The silver lining to their defeat was that Lagway had accomplished one of the greatest feats in Texas High School Football history by breaking the 6A record for most passing touchdowns in a season, winning Mr. Texas Football honors, and being named the MaxPreps National Player of the Year for football.

Now the reigning District Coach of the Year, Trent Miller, must steer his remaining talented athletes toward repeated success. Their journey toward a potential repeat district championship starts on August 30th against Benjamin Davis, and their run in 13-6A starts against Caney Creek on September 13th.

The eyes of an anxious Willis and 13-6A will be on the Wildkats throughout 2024.
