Pickleball Tournament Big Hit at April Sound

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- The fastest growing sport in the U.S. came to April Sound Country Club recently as the “Lake Conroe Summer Smash” tournament drew over 150 players with some of the top players in the area.

“It was a great event, we were able to raise over $2,000 for our local charity and everyone had a great time, we had some great competition” said organizer Todd James.

“Pickleball is such a great sport I take my hat off to April Sound for providing us with such a great place to have our tournament. It truly is one of the top facilities in Houston for pickleball.”

With the threat of inclement weather all weekend players competed in open singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mix doubles. Allan Sanders of The Woodlands Country Club won the Men's Singles 4.0 gold medal with Jana Hain (Katy) and Nicki Tafolla (San Antonio) winning the Women's 3.5 Doubles.

“We had a little rain come through Friday night but everyone had a great attitude and competed hard,” said James.

“I can’t wait for our next tournament in September when the weather will be a little cooler. We’re going to have a ton of great sponsor items for our swag bags and we’re expecting an even bigger group of players.”

April Sound will continue with the “Lake Conroe Fall Shootout” September 24-26 where each player will receive a free lunch on Saturday along with a t-shirt. Proceeds will be distributed to TRELS Home for Children as the tournament’s official charity.

According to the Sport and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) pickleball participation grew 22% last year through the pandemic and currently has over 4 million participants in the United States.
