PORTER, TX -- On a cold Saturday afternoon the New Caney Eagles hosted The Woodlands Highlanders in their first matchup of the district season. It would be a pitching battle between New Caney’s Damon Anthony and The Woodlands’ Ethan Coronel.

Each pitcher would get their respected strikeouts but it was New Caney who would strike first in the bottom of the second. Justin Brown would hit a single and bring in a run giving the Eagles a quick 1-0 lead.

The Woodlands would get into some trouble in the fourth as New Caney loaded the bases. Coronel would take a breather and retire the side before any other hits were made.

As the pitching battle continued, The Woodlands once again got into some trouble again in the bottom of the sixth. This time Isaiah Reyes would also hit a single to bring one in giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The Woodlands head coach Ron Eastman decided to bring in Caleb Barry-Smith in as a relief pitcher to finish off the game. New Caney would not get another run but would close out The Woodlands 2-0 on their home field.

New Caney and The Woodlands will meet again next week on Tuesday, this time at Scotland Yard where The Highlanders look to redeem themselves.

Todd Foley with the New Caney Eagles was asked about joining the 6A district, “If we had out option, we’d like to stay 5A… But coming in here against all these good teams from the Conroe area, it's just an honor to be able to come in here and play some good baseball with these guys.”
