Neighbors & First Responders Awarded for Saving Father’s Life
CONROE, TX -- It started as a typical Sunday in November in one neighborhood of South Montgomery County. George Olendorf was planning to mow the lawn, but, when Ron Moore drove by, he saw George lying in the driveway, unconscious. He was in cardiac arrest.
That’s when a series of fortunate events started… that ended up saving George’s life. Two nurses, also neighbors driving by, pulled up and began CPR immediately. Another nurse ran over from a nearby home. Two young boys ran to alert their dad to call 911.
After the initial 911 call to MCHD, Carter Parent, a deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, was the first to arrive. The former EMT for MCHD was equipped with an AED. Minutes later, firefighters from South Montgomery County Fire Department and paramedics from MCHD arrived and took over George’s care. After pulses returned, paramedics inserted a breathing tube, administered medications to get his heart back to a normal rhythm, and transported him to the hospital.
“If you look at all cardiac arrest in the United States, survival rates are around 7 to 8%,” said Dr. Casey Patrick, MCHD Medical Director. “Everything came together perfectly for you in this case – from the quick 911 call, to bystander CPR, to an AED, to the great care you received from firefighters, paramedics and our hospital partners – that all added up to you being here with us today. It’s a testament to the great system of care we have in Montgomery County.”
George underwent triple bypass surgery and has spent the last four months recovering. Today, he is doing amazingly well and joined everyone at a reunion this week, along with his wife and daughter.
“This is just phenomenal to see all of you guys in one room,” said George Olendorf. “I wouldn’t be here without you. Thank you so much for bringing me back, for saving my life.”
