Former Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Employee Arrested After Alleged Assault of Inmate at Montgomery County Jail

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has arrested former employee Miguel Cortez-Gonzales, 27, in connection with an alleged assault of an inmate at the Montgomery County Jail.

Cortez-Gonzales, who had been employed by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for 14 months, was taken into custody this morning and charged with Violation of Civil Rights of Person in Custody, a third-degree felony.

The charge stems from an incident on July 24, 2026, during which Cortez- Gonzales is alleged to have assaulted an inmate while working in the jail as a detention officer.

To protect the victim’s rights and privacy, the inmate will not be identified. The inmate, a 25 year old male, sustained minor injuries, received medical treatment, and is currently in good health.

An internal investigation was immediately initiated following the incident. Detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit are leading the criminal investigation and made the arrest this morning.

“The care and safety of every person in our custody is not only a constitutional responsibility, but one I take personally,” said Sheriff Doolittle “We are committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining the public’s trust. No one is above the law. This type of behavior is not tolerated, and it will not be accepted within the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.”

This remains an active investigation.
