Golden Regatta for RCTW Juniors in Oklahoma City

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The Rowing Club of The Woodlands Juniors (RCTWJ) traveled to Oklahoma City, OK on October 9 and 10th for the 2010 Head of the Oklahoma Regatta sponsored by Oklahoma City University and presented by Chesapeake Energy and Devon. The Head of the Oklahoma draws junior programs from Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. Collegiate competitors included Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkley, UT, and Washington State as well as the US National Rowing Team plus other top teams from across the U.S.

Crews raced the 4000M course navigating underneath nine bridges in the Boathouse District to win gold and bronze. For many of the RCTW Juniors, this highly competitive regatta on the Oklahoma River was their first. Dominating the category and winning gold and bronze representing the Novice Boys was gold medal Novice A boat Andrew Gomez, Clay Jones, Ian Miller and Nick Fazzino. The A boat was 1:08 ahead of second place Episcopal School of Dallas. The RCTW bronze medalists in the B boat: Jonathon Bohn, Hector Bandera, Tom Leonard and Chris Poradek in a time of 17:44. “We were very happy with our results this first time out as novices” said Jonathon Bohn, Junior at TWCP.

Varsity Boys double Thomas Eastwick, senior homeschooler, and Hugo Gomez, sophomore TWCP, struck gold out of a field of 20 boats to win in a time of 15:52.100, just 1/10 of a second faster than 2nd place Kansas City Rowing Club. “We went in to this race with high expectations of winning. It was close, but we’ve been training hard and knew we had a chance to medal.” said Thomas Eastwick. Varsity Girls double Tara Dalton, senior TWHS, and Marjorie Ferrone, senior Woodlands Prepatory School, took home the bronze in a time of17:18.841, just 1/10 of a second behind the silver boat from Oklahoma City Riversport.

Rachel Lazar, 9th grade TWHS, finished third in the women’s novice single in a time of 24.12. Tara Dalton finished 5th in the Varsity women’s single in a time of 19:16 to qualify for the all out 500M OGE Night Sprints.

To finish off a successful start to the Head Race season, Paris Rosman and Jill Wethington brought home a bronze in the Varsity Girls lightweight double with a time of 20:18.

Womens Varsity Quad:
- 11th place Grace Carbajal, Jill Wethington, Paris Rosman, Camille Sumodobila 18:06

Located at North shore Park in The Woodlands, the club is dedicated to the advancement of rowing and is a registered member of the United States Rowing Association (US Rowing), the national governing body for the sport in the US. Established in 1882, US Rowing is America's oldest amateur sports association. Open to high school students from The Woodlands High School, College Park High School, Oak Ridge High School, John Cooper School, Woodlands Preparatory Academy as well as to homeschoolers, we provide training in the sport of rowing and compete in both head races as well as regattas.
