HOUSTON -- Tuesday afternoon locally owned Milstead Automotive & Towing was dispatched to assist in a bizarre accident involving a big rig where, according to Houston police, the 16-wheeler’s hydraulic arm lifted the bed, ending up at a nearly 45-degree angle creating a rush hour nightmare. The cab separated from the trailer and no one was hurt in the accident.

The incident took place around 5:30 pm closing both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 45 as the signage structure smashed by the empty gravel trailer stretched across both lanes of the highway.

“We were called because we have a 75-ton Rotator that can accommodate such an incident,” Dick Milstead said, CEO of Milstead Automotive & Towing. “There are only two known wreckers of its kind in the local area and the only type wrecker that can assist in such cases.”

Milstead Automotive & Towing fleet of wreckers totals 55 and can accommodate most any mishap large or small.

“Not only do we have the capability to assist in such a bizarre accident, but we also can do the cleanup with our Milstead Environmental equipment,” Amy Milstead said, President of both Milstead Automotive & Towing and Milstead Environmental. “We have a fleet of environmental trucks that also do as much heavy lifting as our wreckers. Our UltraVac can provide up to 16 cubic yards of debris containment for commercial and industrial environmental spills.”

Milstead has invested in a substantial fleet to be a full-service automotive, wrecker, collision and environmental force handling local, regional and national accidents.

“We are proud of our wrecker driver, Don Hornback, for the efficient job he performed,” said Richard Richter, Wrecker Manager for Milstead Automotive & Towing. “All our drivers are well trained and certified to do a job well done.”

Milstead Automotive & Towing is no stranger to major accidents and know that they must be handled quickly, efficiently, with little room for error or delay.

“We work with all local and state agencies, such as TxDOT, Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Conroe Police Department, Oakridge Police Department, and Shenandoah Police Department,” Dick Milstead said. “I don’t know of any other company with such a broad spectrum of services and vehicles as Milstead. We also have a good, established working relationship with law enforcement and emergency crews. They have come to depend on Milstead, and trust our knowledge, and we highly value our relationship with law enforcement.”
