THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Our students report and write wonderful stories about the great things happening on their campuses, and we want to spread the good news! The Communications Office coordinates with secondary campuses to cover stories from a student's point-of-view. All "Student Stories" are submitted by junior high or high school students. -Conroe ISD

Drumline!

by: Drew Rainbolt, McCullough Junior High

Walking into the gym with cymbals in my hand, I felt on top of the world. Being part of the McCullough drumline was a huge accomplishment. It had involved countless hours of practicing and learning three new songs on three different instruments. I worked hard though, and learned the music and earned myself a spot on the McCullough drumline. Drumline consists of nineteen percussionists. Most are eighth graders, but a few seventh graders, like me made it. There are four different instruments that make up the drumline. There are tenors, bass drums, snare drums, and cymbals.

After I made drumline, I learned five songs with the group and we were ready to perform at the pep rally. Walking into the gym and getting ready for the pep rally, knowing we were the main event and the stars of the show, was a life-changing experience.

After the Highland Girls performed, the rest of the show was saved for the drumline. We walked up facing the crowd, and our captain counted us off. After that it was the sound of cymbals crashing to the beat of the other drums. I smiled as we played. Time flew as we played those songs, the rhythms and notes coming together perfectly, like Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

I was sad as the pep rally concluded. I was sad too when I put the cymbals down, but I knew I belonged on the drumline and was excited for the year with the group.
