SPRING, TX -- Going into the weekend there were just four open spots remaining for the Texas 7 on 7 State Tournament. One of those spots was up for grabs Friday night at Grand Oaks High School during the 16-team tournament that included the Grizzlies and the Oak Ridge War Eagles.

Neither Grand Oaks or Oak Ridge was able to make it out of their pools. The Grizzlies went 1-3 in their group, falling to Dobie and Lamar before winning their final game over Texas City, 38-18. Over in Pool D, the War Eagles were winless on the day. The Ridge dropped games to Friendswood, Manvel, and Spring.

In State Qualifying Game, Manvel (Pool D winner) took down Atascocita (Pool B winner) in a thrilling back-and-forth contest. The Mavericks relied on their strong ability to connect on the deep ball to take the lead with about two minutes remaining in the second half. Then, the Manvel defense held off the Eagles by coming up with a game-saving interception on the final play to secure their 37-32 win and clinch a spot in the state tourney.
