Smashed Society’s OG Double, worth the trip to Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, TX -- I had seen Smashed Society (@Smashedsocietytx), for over several months now on Facebook, making a mental note for my perfect conditions (reduced humidity, waning sun, off hours, being nearby) to go for a visit. And this past Thursday, all the boxes had been checked off, and since I was just a stone’s throw away at the time, I stopped. In fact, I gave up a BBQ sandwich for the opportunity. I had been a little skeptical of smash burgers, always favoring a thicker patty, but after trying Smashed Society’s version; located near Walmart in Montgomery in a Food Truck park, well, after the first bite, just one visit will change your mind like it did mine. Owner Dustin Stephens has been open for five months now, and has made quite a difference, with an online following and word of mouth customers that makes his endeavor and effort worthwhile. Smashed Society is his first foray into the food service game, but he loves cooking at home, and he perfected his B = sp2+s2+p+c version of burger making. Some of his creations are mind boggling, and I got to thinking about deciding to pack disposable food safe vinyl gloves in my car for such an occasion. I knew just looking at the social media photos of Stephens’ creations it was going to be messy, which in my judgement definitely has its influence. The messier the better.

Smashed Society’s menu has evolved several times since opening, now offering the OG Smashburgers, in single, double, and triple; all dressed with Smashed Sauce, Pickles, and Cheese. The Smashed Sauce deserves a Royal Society of Chemistry - Food Medal because that stuff wows, and can be used for fries, or perhaps a color on a canvas if thickened properly. I tried the OG Smashburger Double, since it was my first visit, and I wasn’t disappointed. The first bite was incredible, savory with a hint of sweetness, that awesome Smashed Sauce only adding to the experience. It’s the real deal. The patty texture is more than OK, moist, and any charred bits only add to the flavor. It’s hot. Juicy. The cheese ooey and gooey, the fries are coated with Stephens’ own house made seasoning enhancing the taste of golden brown and extra crispy potatoes. And I advise, ditch the ketchup for the Smashed Sauce.

The burger is so good that you will wind up in your own little universe, developing a heightened awareness that your taste buds and sense of smell will drown out, or greatly reduce the noise from passing vehicles on Hwy 105. It’s an experience, because there are so many different ways you can create a burger. You can also try one of the four Speciality Burgers, or ‘Smashed Style,’ with additional patties, grilled onions, or bacon. And with their Add-Ons, you can get what you want, plus for sides, you have the option of tater tots, french fries, or onion rings.

The size of the burgers can get pretty big. The Big Kahuna Smash, is a double smash, white & yellow American cheese, bacon, grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce. It’s a work of art. Then they also have a Society Challenge, a 10 x 10 burger, fries, and a smashed side, which @oldguyeatstx recently won, and includes a whole sheet pan of food. Truly, there are thousands of options in how you want your burger at Smashed Society in Montgomery. Everything is freshly prepared to order, and the menu is ever changing in Stephen’s search for new and interesting flavors. One interesting side offered are the Smashed Tots, which includes a smashed patty on top of tots with the Smashed Sauce, which is an amazing zesty creamy sauce. The pull apart patty mixed with the sauce and tots are mighty tasty for those who wish to avoid the bun. So go and try a smashed burger making up your own formula for perfection to your taste.

Smashed Society is located at 18559 Hwy 105 W in Montgomery, in The Sundowners Food Park.
