U.S. Department of Labor recognizes Lone Star College System for hiring and retaining veterans
HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College System isn’t just a place where veteran students can thrive—it is an institution that honors and welcomes veteran employees looking to advance their careers in a supportive environment. The college system received the 2025 HIRE Vets Gold Medallion Award, honoring U.S. employers that hire the nation’s heroes.
“Supporting and empowering our veteran community is a priority for us at Lone Star College System,” said Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. David J. Yebra, LSCS chief veterans officer. “We celebrate our veteran employees and value the diverse skills they bring following their military service. We are honored to be recognized for our work in ensuring veterans can build meaningful, fulfilling careers at Lone Star College System.”
The HIRE Vets Medallion Award launched in 2018 following the passage of the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act. The federal program recognizes employer efforts to recruit, employ, retain and professionally develop veterans.
This year, 887 employers were recognized nationally, including 59 in Texas. To qualify for the Gold Medallion Award, LSCS had to meet the following requirements:
- At least 7% of new hires are veterans
- At least 75% of veteran employees were retained for the last 12 months
- Have an established veteran organization or resource group and a leadership program
“This award reflects Lone Star College System’s dedication to honoring the sacrifice and service of our military veterans,” said Patricia Woods, LSCS senior associate vice chancellor, Human Resources. “We are proud to employ over 500 local veterans, supporting their transition into civilian careers and long-term professional growth.”
The HIRE Vets Gold Medallion Award is just one of many veteran-related highlights for LSCS this year, following the hiring of its inaugural chief veterans officer and the receipt of the 2025 Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Gold Award, which recognizes Texas higher education institutions demonstrating excellence in supporting veteran and military-connected students.
