Released to critical acclaim in 1986, Aliens is the sequel to the 1979 sci-fi horror blockbuster film Alien. Directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, the film centers around Ripley, the sole survivor of an alien attack who returns to the site of the attack with a unit of Colonial Marines to investigate. Aliens became one of the highest-grossing films of 1986 earning over $130 million internationally and garnered an Academy Award Best Actress nomination for Sigourney Weaver, a rare feat for a science fiction film, and won in the categories of Sound Effects Editing and Visual Effects.
