Statement from Commissioner Charlie Riley
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- Statement from Commissioner Charlie Riley
Over the past several days, my opponent and his supporters have circulated false accusations, misleading claims, and misinformation. I will address them directly.
First, I do not remove political signs. Neither does my campaign. That accusation is false.
What has occurred is that multiple property owners have contacted me personally, upset that campaign signs were placed on their private property without permission. Property owners are within their legal rights to remove signs that do not belong on their land.
In addition, campaign signs have been observed placed within the highway right of way. This is a violation of the Texas Transportation Code. Signs placed illegally are subject to removal by law or by affected property owners. Campaigns are responsible for knowing and following the law. I do not spend my time, or taxpayer resources, addressing another candidate’s violations.
There have also been repeated claims that electing my opponent would somehow fix FM 1488 and Old Conroe Road. This is false.
FM 1488 is under the authority of the State of Texas through TxDOT. Old Conroe Road is under the jurisdiction of the City of Conroe. A County Commissioner does not control either roadway. Suggesting otherwise reflects either a misunderstanding of basic government structure or a deliberate attempt to mislead voters.
I have worked with TxDOT engineers, state representatives and senators, and city officials to advocate for solutions, while continuing to do the job I was elected to do. The road projects within my authority are on time and frequently ahead of schedule. Results matter.
I have also heard calls for me to stop rapid growth in our area. I understand those concerns, but I will be honest with the public. A County Commissioner does not have the legal authority to prevent property owners from selling their land to developers, nor can the County deny development projects that meet all legal requirements and adopted development standards. Doing so would be illegal. Making promises that cannot be lawfully kept is not leadership.
It is also deeply troubling that some supporters of my opponent have resorted to personal attacks, including my support for America’s ally, Israel. I am a devout Christian and stand firmly in my beliefs. These attacks have nothing to do with the responsibilities of a County Commissioner and everything to do with a lack of substance.
I was elected to serve the people of Montgomery County. I will remain focused on facts, integrity, and results. I encourage my opponent to focus on his qualifications, his record, and what he intends to contribute, rather than spreading misinformation.
Finally, all campaigns should ensure their activities comply with Texas law, including regulations governing political signage.
This community deserves leadership grounded in truth and accountability.
