HOUSTON, TX -- Campuses across Lone Star College System will celebrate Black History Month with free events for students and the community, including engaging discussions, exhibits, arts and crafts, film screenings, and community gatherings.

This year marks a full century of national commemoration of Black history. In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History Week, which would ultimately evolve into Black History Month, according to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).

“Black History Month is an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the contributions and achievements of Black Americans,” said Quentin Wright, Ed.D., LSC-Houston North president. “Lone Star College System celebrates the critical role our Black students and employees play in the community’s past, present and future.”

LSCS will host Black History Month events at several campuses throughout February:

Feb. 2-28: In partnership with the Center for Civic Engagement, LSC-Houston North Fallbrook presents “Juneteenth,” an exhibit by Humanities Texas which highlights the lasting effects of June 19, 1865, the day enslaved Black Americans in Galveston learned of their freedom.

Feb. 3: LSC-Kingwood hosts a book signing for “The Water Cries: Uncovering the Slave Auction Houses of Galveston, Texas,” by Anthony Paul Griffin. Griffin will present his research and findings at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Conference Center.

Feb. 4: LSC-Houston North Fallbrook hosts a “Divine Nine Dialogues” panel from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Members of historically Black fraternities and sororities share how their organizations shape leadership, scholarship, service and community engagement.

Feb. 5 and 25: Black professionals, scholars and community leaders will inspire students as they reflect on their journeys, challenges and triumphs at the “Legacy Leaders: Stories of Black Excellence” event. Two sessions will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.—at LSC-Houston North Victory on Feb. 5 and at LSC-Houston North Greenspoint on Feb. 25.

Feb. 10: Students are invited to a Black History Month film screening and moderated discussion at LSC-North Houston from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Feb. 10: Professor Fernell Pabon-Jimenez will deliver a talk on St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit missionary known as the patron saint of slaves, at LSC-Kingwood, Administration and Performing Arts Center, Room 119, at 12:30 p.m.

Feb. 11: The DACAMERA Young Artists perform a free concert featuring pieces written by Black composers through a variety of styles and eras from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at LSC-CyFair, ART building, Main Stage Theatre.

Feb. 17: LSC-Kingwood hosts a Black History Month poetry reading honoring Black poets, history and creative expression in the Administration and Performing Arts Center, Room 119, at 12:30 p.m.

Feb. 19: An interactive “Human Library” experience will be held at LSC-Houston North from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., inviting participants to explore lived histories, cultural perspectives and powerful stories bringing history to life.

Feb. 27: A free Community & Culture Night at LSC-North Houston will feature food trucks, music, face painting and a celebration of Black history for all ages from 6:30-8 p.m.

“With true intentionality, Lone Star College System curated many opportunities for individuals to participate in Black History Month,” said Carol Ash, Ed.D., LSC-CyFair vice president, Instruction. “Engaging in these programs as a community affirms our commitment to creating space for meaningful dialogue, strengthening our collective capacity to teach, learn, and lead with purpose, and enriching the educational journey of all students.”
