New bachelor’s degree in education approved to launch this fall at Lone Star College System
HOUSTON, TX -- Future educators can now pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education and Teaching (BAS ECET) at Lone Star College System. As school districts in the Houston region and beyond face teacher shortages, this program will equip and empower the next generation of teachers committed to excellence in their classrooms.
“We want our local schools to be staffed by highly qualified, compassionate teachers who are prepared to meet their students’ unique learning needs,” said Rebecca Saiz, LSCS executive director, Educator Preparation Program. “By strengthening the pipeline of qualified teachers, Lone Star College System is strengthening the future of the communities we serve.”
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges have approved the new degree program after confirming academic alignment with state needs.
The program is slated to launch this fall at LSC-Atascocita Center and LSC-Creekside Center with a cohort of 50 students at each site, producing certified teachers in Early Childhood-Grade 3 and Early Childhood-Grade 6. The two-year program is designed for students who have completed an Associate of Arts in Teaching, Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, or another associate degree with directed electives.
“Lone Star College System is thrilled to welcome students into our fifth bachelor’s degree program this fall, offering a more affordable pathway for students who aspire to teach,” said Megan Mariveles, Ph.D., LSCS interim executive dean, Baccalaureate Programs. “We look forward to growing this program and supporting the region’s education systems for years to come.”
Admissions will open later this spring. For more information, contact the LSCS Ready2Teach Program at 281-312-1716; LSC-EPP-BAS@lonestar.edu for the bachelor’s program and LSC-EPP-ATCP@lonestar.edu for the Alternative Teacher Certification Program.
