WILLIS – As the high school baseball season winds down, teams have settled into their places in the district, and the playoff picture is starting to take shape. Several important series are underway in the final two weeks, including the Grand Oaks Grizzlies versus the Willis Wildcats. Coming into the series, Grand Oaks was swept by the Conroe Tigers, leaving them vulnerable in the standings. Willis was in a similar spot, also swept by the top-ranked Oak Ridge War Eagles in brutal fashion. Both teams entered the week hungry for a win, as Willis was in danger of losing its playoff spot to Conroe if it surrendered even one win. This set up a pivotal Game 1 in the series, which was a close battle throughout and resulted in a huge victory for the Wildkats. Now, Grand Oaks will attempt to respond in Friday’s Game 2 to keep their status in check. Game 2 of this series will be streamed live here on Woodlands Online, so be sure to tune in to an awesome game. But first, let’s check in on how Tuesday’s matchup went down and what to expect on Friday.

Game 1: Willis and Grand Oaks Show Off Powerful Offenses

In the opening game of the series, both teams needed a win after being swept, and the Willis Wildkats ultimately prevailed in a glorious evening slugfest. The 1st inning started strong, with Willis’s Brett Roberts smashing a 2-run home run over the left-field fence after Keaton Jeffcoat’s single with 2 outs. Willis then kept the 2-out rally going, with 3 straight base hits by Reid Dorwart, Justin Zakos, and Dylan Hawthorne, all making contact and getting on base. Hawthorne’s single drove in Dorwart for Willis’s 3rd run of the inning, before a Shey Holliday flyout ended the inning with the Wildkats up 3-0.

Grand Oaks responded right back, however, when Colton Tally laid down a bunt that put him on 3rd on a critical throwing error by Grand Oaks 3B Mason Miller. Tally then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hector Francia-Linares, making the score 3-1. An RBI single from Callum Wilson drove in Andrew Clayton, who had hit a double in the previous at-bat, before a flyout by Brody Freitas ended the inning at a 3-2 score.

In the 2nd, Grand Oaks starting pitcher Cade Calhoun stayed in the game despite a rough start and pitched a solid inning, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 2 batters. Willis starter Shey Holliday responded to a rough start, throwing a solid inning and not allowing a hit, even though an error left a man on base. The top of the 3rd saw the scoring continue for Willis, as a sacrifice bunt from Hawthorne moved Zakos to 3rd, and then a Shey Holliday single drove in Zakos for a 4-2 lead. With 2 outs, Willis rallied again, with Gage Blinka smashing a 1-run double into center field, making it 6-2 and forcing Grand Oaks to pull Calhoun early. Jeffcoat then brought Blinka home with a single into right field, showing that a change in pitcher wasn’t going to stop this offense just yet. Jeffcoat was then caught stealing on a very close throw from the catcher, which ended the inning with Willis leading 7-2.

The Grizzlies were not deterred, still getting the bases loaded after Collin Martin singled to start the inning. With 1 out, both Owen Eastwood and Wilson were hit by pitches. Freitas then singled on a ground ball, which led to chaos on the diamond. An error allowed all 3 baserunners to score and Freitas to move to 2nd, making the score a resounding 7-5. Holliday was not shaken, though, getting through the rest of the inning unharmed after a double play ended the inning with runners on 1st and 3rd.

From there, Grand Oaks stayed in the game, pitching a solid 4th inning and pulling the game even closer. Tally and Francia-Linares both singled, and a nice tag by Tally on a flyout let him reach 3rd with just 1 out in the inning. Clayton then hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Tally to score and putting the game at 7-6. Holliday remained in, throwing a solid rest of the inning, but the Grizzlies were back in the hunt.

It didn’t last long, though. In the top of the 5th, Grand Oaks pitcher Perison walked two batters before Jeffcoat came through with another clutch hit, driving in Cash Abke on an RBI double to make it 8-6. Roberts then hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Blinka, who was on 3rd, to score the final run of the game, putting it at 9-6.

The bottom of the 5th saw Shey Holliday stay in as the pitcher, retiring the first 3 batters he faced to get out of the inning unscathed. Noah Lopez came into the game in the 6th, pitching a solid 2 innings, but ultimately lacked offensive support for the rest of the game. Holliday, on the other hand, stayed in for the full 7 innings, seemingly getting better as the game went on, shutting down a powerful Grizzlies offense and making it through without allowing another run. Holliday’s impressive performance allowed the Wildkats to finish the game with a solid 9-6 win, keeping their playoff hopes alive after a struggle the previous week.

Altogether, this was an impressive performance from both teams, with plenty of hits and exciting action throughout the game. Keaton Jeffcoat is certainly the MVP of this game for the Wildkats, going 5-5 at the plate and driving in 2 RBIs. Other guys like Zakos, Blinka, Hawthorne, and Roberts all deserve praise too, with Roberts getting that key HR to start and the others all having several hits across the game. Shey Holliday had an impressive day on both the mound and the plate, getting some key hits, while also cleaning up his game to go all 7 innings in a solid pitching performance. Willis looks like the team we thought they could be and will be going back home to play Grand Oaks tomorrow in another key matchup.

Looking Ahead To Game 2

Overall, game 1 was just the start of this awesome series, and game 2 should be just as fun. Willis will be the home team in game 2, giving them every advantage in the world to sweep the series and secure a spot in the playoffs. This will also be Willis’s last district game of the regular season, so a win here would be a huge momentum swing for them heading into the postseason, if they can make it. Grand Oaks is hoping to ruin that chance, though, as they try to climb out of this 3-game skid they’ve been on over the past couple of weeks. They will have to keep up the electric offense they are known for and clean up the pitching if they want any chance of finishing strong. Game 2 will be broadcast live here on Woodlands Online, so be sure to tune in, as this is shaping up to be an exciting end to a spectacular season.
