Woodlands Church Athlete Of The Week: Luis Olmeda's Two Home Runs Power Oak Ridge Past Grand Oaks
CONROE – The Oak Ridge War Eagles have had an outstanding baseball season so far, currently leading the district with a 9-0 record and looking like the team to beat in District 13. The offense has been exceptional, with strong batting throughout the 9-player lineup, and the ability to score double-digit runs in any game. Leading the offense for the War Eagles this week is Luis Olmeda, who earns the Woodlands Church Athlete of the Week for his impressive performance against Grand Oaks.
Sitting atop the standings, Oak Ridge has been a powerhouse in the district so far. They’ve improved a lot since their third-place finish last season, and hitting has been a key factor in their rise. Our Athlete of the Week, Luis Olmeda, has significantly contributed to the surge in offense, serving as a major bat in the #2 spot in the lineup. He earned this award through his outstanding performance against Grand Oaks, a fierce rival and a team just behind them in the standings. Olmeda homered twice in Thursday’s game against the Grizzlies, launching a solo shot into left field in the first inning and a two-run shot into right field in the third inning. Homering on both his first and second at-bats is incredible, something rare even for major league hitters, let alone at the high school level. Even more astonishing is that Olmeda was then intentionally walked in all his other at-bats, which shows how scared Grand Oaks was of him hitting another bomb. All this in a single game easily earns Olmeda the Woodlands Church Athlete of the Week award and highlights just how dominant the War Eagles have been this season.
With such a strong performance from Olmeda, it's not surprising to see that he does this to everyone in some past games. Against Conroe, Olmeda hit a double and a 2-run homer in the 5th inning to put the War Eagles in the driver's seat, 4-1. Against New Caney, he hit a 3-run shot that put the War Eagles up 4-0 in the 2nd inning. Overall, Luis Olmeda has been one of the most exciting players in the district this season, and it's no surprise that Oak Ridge can score as much as they have with him at the plate. Olmeda and Oak Ridge will face Grand Oaks in game 2 of the Battle of the Oaks series Tuesday, aiming for a clean sweep over their rivals.
