Weather dampening some weekend events
THE WOODLANDS, TX – With winds, rains, thunder, and lightning dominating the next few days, several Woodlands-area event organizers are rethinking the weekend festivities, and as a result, some events have been canceled, postponed, or otherwise put on “wait-and-see” notice. Here is a current listing of already-affected events. Stay tuned to Woodlands Online for updates as we receive them.
Market Street
-
The “Light it Up Pink” event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month scheduled for tonight at Market Street – in partnership with the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center – is now taking place next Thursday, October 8, from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. The scheduled accompanying Fall Concert Series kickoff appearance of Hybrid 7 has likewise been pushed back a week.
Pine Market
-
Tonight’s Concert in the Park featuring CC Rider Band has been rescheduled for Friday, October 23.
-
The First Saturday Fitness Class, hosted by BodyBar Fitness, that was slated for October 3 has been canceled.
Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
-
All four concerts scheduled for this weekend – Mumford & Sons tonight, Boz Scaggs with Irma Thomas on Friday, Eagle Fest featuring ZZ Top and Cheap Trick on Saturday, and TLC & Salt-N-Pepa with En Vogue on Sunday – are expected to proceed, as the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion operates strictly as a rain-or-shine venue. Performances will only be delayed or adjusted if weather conditions present an immediate danger to guests or performers.
-
If you have lawn tickets, you will be completely exposed to the elements, so bringing rain gear (ponchos) is highly recommended. Standard umbrellas are typically not allowed inside the venue to avoid blocking other guests’ views.
-
In the event of lightning or sudden severe weather, the venue will instruct guests to shelter in their vehicles until an “all clear” is given.
High School Football
-
Conroe ISD follows standard UIL and NFHS safety guidelines for outdoor athletic events affected by rain, lightning, and severe weather. Currently, all scheduled games are still expected to be played.
-
Campus athletic coordinators, district athletic administrators (led by Director of Athletics Chris Feris), and game officials monitor incoming weather and make the final call to suspend, delay, or cancel events.
-
Outdoor play is suspended immediately upon the visual sighting of a lightning strike or if thunder is heard. Once activities are suspended, all participants, coaches, and spectators must clear the fields and move to a designated safer shelter (such as a permanent on-site building). Play cannot resume until at least 30 minutes have passed following the last observed flash of lightning or sound of thunder. Clock Reset: Any subsequent thunder or lightning flash during the 30-minute waiting period resets the clock back to zero.
-
Heavy rain that makes turf or natural grass fields unsafe or unplayable results in postponements or rescheduling at the discretion of the athletic department.
