THE WOODLANDS, TX – Since its inception in 1998 by husband and wife team Mark and Kathy Dawson, Dawson Security Group, Inc. – formerly known as Dawson Safe & Lock – has provided home and business protection and security services to hundreds of families and executives alike.

“Nothing is more valuable than the safety, security and protection of families and assets,” Mark told Woodlands Online.

Then vs. Now

With 44 years of locksmithing experience – including the 27 years of DSG ownership and being a member of various regional and national boards of directors – he truly exhibits a passion for providing safety, security, and succor for members of his home community and beyond.

“If you’re not there for your industry, you’re there for the wrong reason,” he said.

Mark thinks back to the earlier days of law enforcement in easier, less technical times. “Back in the 1950s, the police were more of a preventative force. Now, they’re more reactive.” While noting that local law enforcement can provide specially requested “drive-bys” for families on holidays, it is typically after a crime such as a burglary has been committed that they make a fuller presence. But for the victim of the crime, the damage has already been done and can only hope to be mitigated.

The Cost of Insecurity

Home burglaries are far from being “victimless crimes” unworthy of proactive attention. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, there were a recorded 78,945 burglary and breaking-and-entering offenses in 2025. While that was a 10 percent decrease from the year before, the statistic wasn’t of any comfort to those affected.

Residential properties account for roughly 66 percent of all reported burglary offenses. Statewide property loss and stolen value reports and regional studies show that residential and property burglaries account for hundreds of millions of dollars in financial impact. Last year, reported burglary losses in Texas totaled $557,606,833, with only a two percent recovery rate totaling $12,287,274.

On a per-offense basis, most reports state that an average of roughly $2,700 per individual burglary incident, though high-value residential break-ins involving electronics, firearms, or property damage frequently exceed that amount.

Security Levels are Key

With Dawson and his crews, however, multiple, custom-fit layers of security can be designed, installed, and provided. “Proactive is always better than reactive,” he told Woodlands Online. “Every time a security system is installed – even a simple one like a lock – it needs to exceed the expectations of the one it is replacing. It needs to be better than before.”

Surprisingly, he stresses the importance of the basics being the initial level of protection. While a wired, monitored, electronic, high-tech security system is only as good as the employee on the far end of the alarm signal, a well-made and well-installed key lock can’t be beat for the first and primary level of home defense.

“Physical security in particular is what we excel in,” Mark told Woodlands Online. According to him, a good lock installed in a door with kick-in protection provides deterrence, protection, and early warning. The same goes for most windows in a home and business. A favorite lock used by Mark and his crews is a Medeco Grade 1 lock such as the Medeco 4 Maxum Deadbolt, which includes an industrial-strength, high-security deadbolt certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1 and listed under UL 437 for pick, bump, and drill resistance.

He points out that such locks on external doors only are merely the first step. Should someone foil that first step and gain entry into the property, having similar locks and kick-resistant doors on interior doors can buy precious time. Single residents and parents of latchkey kids can breathe easier knowing that the added protection of entry-resistant safe rooms can protect themselves and their loved ones.

To Mark, home electronic security systems are a secondary layer. “The alarm responds only after the failure of the first layer. Someone can spend many minutes breaking in a door or window before the alarm company gets an alert after the door is kicked in or the window opened. At that point, you’re already back in reactive mode.” Additionally, he says, once the alarm company receives an alert, precious minutes are lost as their protocols typically have them calling down a list of contacts before dispatching emergency services.

He also notes that many people rely heavily on a monitored electronic system as a “security blanket,” choosing the technology of an alarm over hard metal and thick reinforcements of a protected door. He also points out that, while his company sells commercial-grade cameras for a third layer, they shouldn’t solely be relied on unless absolutely necessary. “They can record all they want, but they rarely result in an arrest.”

Smart locks and video doorbells are also, to Mark, only to be used as supplements to “good old fashioned” bolts and locks. “If you remotely answer your video doorbell, you have to pretend you’re home, and some of the smarter home invaders can easily figure out you’re not there,” he told Woodlands Online. “Smart locks are more expensive; also, their convenience is offset by the ability to be hacked and lowered security, which makes the ‘smart’ label a little oxymoronic.”

Protection Inside and Out

Mark warns that a determined criminal with enough time and resources can compromise simple levels of home security. “Everything can be compromised,” he notes. However, even if a burglar or invader gains entry to your home or business, the damage can be mitigated by yet another significant layer of security: a safe.

“These are an absolute must to protect your important property, possessions, and papers,” he told Woodlands Online. “We’re selling them more than ever, and for good reason. Our best ones are anchored to your foundation and exceedingly difficult to get into and nearly impossible to to remove. At this point, even the most determined criminals would most likely be discouraged and opt to cut their losses.”

Additionally, the proper safe system installed in your home or business can protect your treasured possessions from damage caused by fire, smoke, water, and more.

Complete Community Care

Mark, his family, and his crews love the community, having spent 25 years in the same shop and watching the Township grow and mature along with his own home and business. He truly cares for the security, safety, comfort, and solace of Woodlands families, business owners, and employees. Each project is a custom experience for Mark and his clients; a “one size fits all” motif is not part of his business model. This model seems to have worked effectively; the proof in the pudding of his business winning twelve “Best of The Woodlands” awards.

“Our team of extensively trained, appropriately licensed, bonded, and fully insured locksmiths, security technicians, and support staff are all committed to the same thing: excellence in workmanship and customer service,” he said. Particularly as the holidays approach, he hopes to hear from individuals and entities desiring to protect their possessions with one or more layers of the significant security the Dawson company provides.
