More Than a Job: Patricia and Sybil Find Purpose, Pride and Opportunity at TEAM Café
Linkedin
SPRING, TX -- When customers walk into TEAM Café in Spring, they may see Patricia and Sybil preparing an order, helping behind the counter or taking care of one of the many jobs required to keep a café running. What customers may not immediately see is everything that job represents.Independence. Confidence. Responsibility. Purpose. And the simple pride of knowing: I am needed here.Patricia and Sybil are adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities served by TEAM Abilities. Today, they are also working members of the TEAM Café crew, putting into practice skills they have learned while experiencing something most people take for granted—the opportunity to have a job and contribute.Their story takes on special significance during National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), observed each October to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and promote inclusive employment opportunities.“At TEAM Abilities, we know our Team Members thrive when they have opportunities to be productive, learn new skills and participate in the everyday life of their community,” said Rachel Jelks, Founder & CEO of TEAM Abilities and Owner of TEAM Café. “TEAM Café gives them a place to practice those skills in a real-world environment while building confidence and experiencing the pride that comes from contributing.”TEAM Café was created to combine good food with a greater purpose by providing adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities for hands-on vocational training and meaningful work experiences. For Patricia and Sybil, that means showing up, having responsibilities, learning, working alongside others and knowing that their contribution matters. And sometimes, the significance of employment can be found in the smallest moments: putting on an apron, completing a task, helping a customer, working beside a coworker or simply knowing that people are counting on you. Those are ordinary moments for millions of working Americans. For someone who has spent much of life waiting for an opportunity to participate, they can be extraordinary.“Employment and vocational training are about so much more than earning a paycheck,” Jelks said. “They are about purpose, confidence, independence and belonging. Everyone deserves the opportunity to discover what they can do and to know that what they contribute matters.”That belief is at the heart of TEAM Café.Rather than focusing on disability, the café provides an environment where the emphasis can shift to something much more important:Ability. What can Patricia do?What can Sybil learn? What responsibility can they take on next? And what happens to a person's confidence when the world stops concentrating on what they may not be able to do and gives them the opportunity to demonstrate everything they can?For TEAM Abilities, those questions are part of a larger commitment to helping adults with special needs live lives that include not only care and support, but also purpose, participation and meaningful connection to their community.TEAM Café invites the community to become part of that mission simply by walking through the door, ordering lunch, meeting the crew and supporting a workplace where people of all abilities have an opportunity to contribute.Because sometimes inclusion isn't complicated.Sometimes it looks like an apron, a job to do and someone saying, “We need you today.”VISIT TEAM CAFÉTEAM Café WED-THURS-FRI: 11-3PM SAT: 11-3PM SUN: NOON – 3PM21127 Spring Towne Dr.Spring, TX 77388Good Food • Great People • One TEAMABOUT TEAM CAFÉTEAM Café is where good food meets a greater purpose.
