THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Woodlands High School boys’ basketball team learned a valuable lesson on Tuesday night, and that is that you can play good zone defense, run the floor well in transition, even run an efficient half-court offense, but if you don’t hit your free throws, you’re not going to beat the really good teams.

The Highlanders (5-2) learned that the hard way, falling 67-64 in overtime at home to the Elkins Knights (4-1).

The Woodlands had things going their way and except for a second-quarter lapse led for most of regulation play before missing free throws down the stretch to open the door for the Knights to catch up, tie the game, and with the help of more missed Highlanders free throws win the game in overtime.

The Highlanders led 22-14 at the quarter before Elkins used an 18-7 second-quarter run to grab a 32-29 edge at halftime. But The Woodlands regained the lead with a 17-10 run in the third quarter and held a 46-42 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Wes Cole performed his magic from 3-point range, finishing with a game-high 25 points. Brandon Caporale added 12 more.
