Smoke in The Woodlands coming from prescribed Conroe burn
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Smoke blanketing The Woodlands is not coming from a nearby, unruly blaze but a controlled fire near Lake Conroe.
The prescribed burn is being conducted along the north end of the lake and Walker County by the US Forest, according to the Woodlands Township. The service is burning about 1,000 acres.
Winds however began gusting south in the early afternoon Thursday, causing the smoke to infiltrate The Woodlands, giving the impression of a fire close by.
The gusts reached almost 20 mph in the afternoon after having been calm, between, 5 and 10 mph, for most of the day, said Wendy Wong with the National Weather Service in Dickinson.
"The winds have begun to calm down a bit in the last couple of hours...down to 7 mph," Wong said.
Prescribed burns have also been carried out in recent days at Jones National Forest, prompting phone calls to The Woodlands Fire Department. The department did not answer repeated phone calls Thursday afternoon.
