THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Officials announced on Monday that The Woodlands fireworks display scheduled for July 4 has been canceled due to historic drought conditions. This marks the first time since its inception in 1975 that the popular fireworks show has been canceled.

All other holiday entertainment and activities scheduled for the holiday weekend will go on as scheduled, including: the South Montgomery County 4th of July Parade; Things That Go Bike Parade; Red, Hot & Blue Festival, Splash Day; and The Star Spangled Salute.

“After careful consideration, I am recommending the cancellation of the Annual Fourth of July public fireworks display,” said Fire Chief Alan B. Benson in a released statement.

“This year our region is experiencing an unprecedented drought. While the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is currently 692, which is slightly below what is considered extreme potential fire conditions (700-800), it is predicted that Montgomery County, including The Woodlands Township, will be well above the 700 range this week, unless substantial rainfall occurs. It is my understanding that the wildfire which occurred in Grimes County, recently started when the drought index was slightly below 700, as The Woodlands is currently experiencing now. For these reasons, I feel that the level of risk this year is simply not acceptable,” said Benson.

“The Woodlands has and always will be committed to public safety, and one of the most valued characteristics of our area is our forest,” said Nick Wolda, president of The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau. “This decision has been made not to chance any loss of our natural beauty and any damage to our residential or commercial properties as a result of the public fireworks display.”

Montgomery County remains under a burn ban and the sale of private fireworks has been suspended. Private fireworks are not permitted in The Woodlands Township.
