Baseball: District 14-5A openers set for Tuesday
THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The District 14-5A season begins Tuesday for baseball teams at The Woodlands, College Park and Oak Ridge High Schools.
The Oak Ridge War Eagles host the College Park Cavaliers at 7 p.m. while The Woodlands Highlanders open district play at 7 p.m. at Scotland Yard, hosting Atascocita.
The Cavaliers completed predistrict play with an impressive 10-2-1 mark. They were able to squeeze in a couple of games Thursday before heavy rains washed out the weekend slate. They got past Bryan 2-1 in eight innings. Brandon Holloway got the win in relief of starter David Ellingson. The two combined on a three-hitter. Kevin Barnes, Chris Grupp and Tyler Vaughan had hits for College Park.
The Cavaliers also dropped a 2-1 decision to Tomball. Dakota Parsons doubled and Vaughan drove in a run. Elingson, Barnes, Zack Wilson and Alex Young had hits.
Oak Ridge had its tournament in Pflugerville washed out. The War Eagles enter district play at 4-5, having split four games the weekend prior at the Katy Tournament, where the claimed wins over Pearland Dawson (7-6) and Cy-Lakes (9-4). They also dropped close decisions to Katy (4-2) and Kingwood Park (3-2).
Dylan Cyr collected three hits, including a homer and a double, while Luken Baker, Riley McKnight and Casey Wyatt added two each with Baker driving in a pair of runs to defeat Pearland Dawson. Tyler Shumpert struck out eight in four innings of work to earn the win with relief help from R.J. Feltman and Tyler Miller. Joey Hernandez added a hit and drove in a run.
Gavin Grissom doubled and drove in three runs to help the War Eagles past Cy-Lakes. Kyle Mims added a RBI and Zack Maidens doubled.
Baker collected three of 10 War Eagles hits in the loss to Kingwood Park. Mario Garza added two more.

The Highlanders won the first two games of the Highland Park Tournament over the weekend before dropping the final two. The Woodlands earned wins over Flower Mound (8-1) and Friendship (19-0) before falling 4-3 to Denton Guyer and 9-4 to Rowlett.
Robbie Goldschmidt tripled and drove in three runs while Matt Olive added two hits and drove in two runs to lead the win over Flower Mound. Charlie Warren doubled and Chris Andritsos (RBI), Alex Dunlap (RBI), Garrett Hope, Corey Laughlin (RBI), and Lance Miles added to the nine-hit attack.
Kevin McCanna and Adam Aldred combined on a one-hitter.
Ryan Burnett struck out nine over four innings and Hope delivered three hits and four RBI in the big win over Friendship. Hope was one of five Highlanders to belt home runs. Dunlap, who also collected three hits, went yard along with Andritsos, Miles and Blaine Gillespie.
Burnett and Brandon Miles combined on the two-hit shutout.
Dunlap tripled and drove in two runs in the loss to Denton Guyer and Joustine Rivera turned in a quality start.
Andritsos homered in the loss to Rowlett while Colton Marek struck out six over four innings of work.
