Baseball: College Park 5, The Woodlands 4
THE WOODLANDS, Texas – And that’s why they play the games.
On paper, Tuesday’s neighboring rivalry between The Woodlands and College Park at Scotland Yard just didn’t seem to have the same fervor that the basketball games had when the two teams met on the hardwood.
The Highlanders came in at 4-0 in District 14-5A play and playing at home seemed to have a distinct edge over College Park, which stumbled into Tuesday’s game at 2-2 in league play.
But it was proven one more time that when these two teams meet, anything can – and usually does – happen. The Cavaliers blew a 4-0 lead late but Alex Young came through for College Park in the top of the seventh inning with a game-winning RBI, scoring Layton Zinsmeister, and reliever Greg Jakusik slammed the door for a 5-4 win.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added two more in the third inning for what seemed to be a comfortable 4-0 advantage.
But the Highlanders made a game of it. Alex Dunlap doubled to tie the game in the sixth inning after Corey Laughlin put the Highlanders on the board with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
Young and Kevin Barnes split College Park’s four hits off Highlanders pitching. Parker Stevens and Cavaliers starting pitcher Mitchell Price each drove in a run.
Jakusik got the win with 1 2/3 innings of work, striking out three. Price worked into the sixth inning, recording seven strikeouts.
Garrett Hope and Highlanders starting pitcher Kevin McCanna had two of the team’s four hits. McCanna struck out eight over six innings on the mound.
The Highlanders made four critical errors in the game. The Woodlands first baseman Robbie Goldschmidt tweeted, “It's not how hard you hit its how fast do you respond I am sorry for embarrassing my school I can't wait to play them again in a few weeks.”
But first things first, The Woodlands (16-5, 4-1) travels to Conroe for a 7 p.m. Friday game. The Tigers (1-4) upset Atascocita 4-2 on Tuesday, sending the Eagles to a 4-2 district record.
College Park (13-4-1, 3-2) host Lufkin at 6 p.m. Friday.
Oak Ridge (2-3), which was idle Tuesday, visits Kingwood for a 7 p.m. Friday game.
