Baseball: The Woodlands on the verge of district title

The Woodlands High School baseball team moved one step closer to clinching the District 14-5A championship on Friday with a 15-5 win over Oak Ridge. The Highlanders can wrap up the title with a win over Kingwood at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The College Park High School baseball team moved into a tie for third place with Kingwood on Tuesday by beating Conroe 8-4 at home Friday.

The Highlanders (21-5, 8-1) posted their fifth consecutive win and ninth in 10 games, extending a 3-0 lead with consecutive five-run innings. Alex Dunlap collected three hits, including two homers, and drove in three runs.

Lance Miles also contributed with three hits and two RBI while Matt Olive and Adam Aldred drove in three runs each. Carter Hope added two of the Highlanders’ 14 hits and Chris Andritsos batted in a couple of runs.

Charlie Warren doubled and drove in a run while Corey Laughlin and Garrett Hope added a hit apiece.

Ryan Burnett got the win, pitching into the sixth inning while striking out 11.

Luken Baker homered for Oak Ridge and drove in three runs. Kyle Mims and Branden Navarro singled and drove in a run apiece while Dylan Cyr, Mario Garza, Riley McKnight, Tyler Shumpert and Justen Heuermann added one hit each.

The College Park Cavaliers improved to 16-6-1 overall and 5-4 in District 14-5A play with a seven-run first inning en route to a third win in four games. Kevin Barnes homered and drove in two runs and Garrett Beard tripled and plated two more.

Layton Zinsmeister (RBI) had two of the Cavaliers’ 10 hits and Tyler Vaughan singled and drove in a run. Alex Young also added one RBI.

Mitchell Price, Parker Stevens, Dakota Parsons, and David Ellingson rounded out College Park’s hit total with one apiece.

The Cavaliers are one half-game behind second-place Atascocita (6-4) and one game ahead of fifth-place Lufkin (4-5). Oak Ridge is in sixth place (4-6) but still very much in the playoff chase with two games remaining.

College Park is at Atascocita at 7 p.m. Friday while Oak Ridge travels to Lufkin at 6 p.m. Friday.
