THE WOODLANDS, Texas - For the second episode of Crafting with Cara, learn how to make a no-sew tutu made of tulle! These are fun additions to any costume for parties, Halloween or just to wear for fun around the house. Perfect for children and teens, tutus can be made of all sizes, even for adults! Refer to the video below for an in-depth tutorial.

To make a tutu, you will need just six items:

Elastic: 3/4” to 1” thick works best

1 to 3 rolls of tulle of any color(s)

Scissors

Measuring tape

2 safety pins

A cardboard square

Step 1: Measure the waist of the person you will be making the tutu for. Then, subtract two to three inches since the elastic will stretch. Cut the elastic to that specific length, and then fasten the ends of the elastic with two safety pins.

Step 2: Spools of tulle work best for this project and can be found at your local craft store. To cut your tulle into strips, find a cardboard square with the length in which you would like your tutu to be. Keep in mind that the strips will be folded in half when placed on the elastic For example; a strip of tulle that is 14 inches long will give the tutu a length of 7 inches. Shoebox lids are generally a good size for tutus. Wrap the tulle several times around the cardboard. Then, cut the tulle from the spool. For a shorter tutu, cut the tulle on both sides of the cardboard, then fold over a few times and cut straight down the middle. The strips will remain the same length, but they will have a width of 3 inches instead of 6 inches. For a longer tutu, cut the tulle on only one side of the cardboard. You now have your strips of tulle that are ready to be tied onto the elastic!

Step 3: Stretch your elastic band in order to make your tutu fluffy. For a toddler/children’s tutu, a tissue box works best. For a teen or adult, stretch the elastic on the back of a chair.

Step 4: To tie the tulle onto the elastic, fold each strip in half, creating a loop at the top. Slip the piece of tulle under the elastic and feed the bottom of the tulle through the top loop, creating a slipknot. Tighten firmly around the elastic, but not too tight where the elastic starts to fold over itself. Continue to do this until the elastic is completely covered with tulle.

Step 5: Take your tutu and fluff the tulle with your fingers. Your tutu is now finished! Don’t be afraid to get creative with the tutus you make! You can make them in all different sizes and colors!
