HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - In response to a rapidly growing population in southeast Montgomery County, The YMCA of Greater Houston is planning to construct a state-of-the-art center to serve areas of Spring and the Conroe Independent School District (CISD), as well as the ever-expanding Falls at Imperial Oaks subdivision.

Construction on the Holcomb Family YMCA, which will be located near the newly completed section of the Grand Parkway on the east side of Interstate 45, could begin as early as 2018 depending on funding. The YMCA is in the process of launching a capital campaign to raise the approximately $13 million needed to construct the facility.

The Holcomb Family YMCA will be built on a wooded site in the Falls at Imperial Oaks subdivision. It will overlook a 100-acre lake with islands and have access to the waterfront. YMCA programs will include after school care, day camp, swim lessons, teen achievement, drowning prevention, personal wellness and more.

The new center will be named after the James (Jim) R. Holcomb family, whose partnership, 830 Investors, Ltd., donated a 10-acre tract of land to the YMCA for the facility. The Holcomb family and the Robert M. Weekley Estate, a longtime contributor to the YMCA, each donated $500,000 toward the construction of the new building.

“A YMCA is vital to this growing area. It will provide thousands of young people and families a safe and nurturing place to play, learn and grow,” said Jim Holcomb. “By giving families access to programs that promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, the YMCA will make this community even stronger.”

According to 2015 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Montgomery County ranks No. 13 among the fastest growing counties in the nation. In response, CISD, which expects enrollment to increase by approximately 8,000 students in the next five years, recently approved allocating $234 million toward building a new high school, intermediate school and two elementary schools – one of which will be within walking distance of the Holcomb Family YMCA.

“The population of southeast Montgomery County in particular is burgeoning, and we want to meet the needs of new individuals and families coming into the area,” said President and CEO of The YMCA of Greater Houston Paul McEntire. “We are committed to improving quality of life by offering programs that foster academic achievement and focus on drowning prevention and healthy living.

The Holcomb Family YMCA also expects to draw people from New Caney and Splendora, as the newly opened Grand Parkway will provide those communities with easy access to the new center.

The YMCA of Greater Houston is one of the area’s largest nonprofit organizations with an operating budget of $125 million. It serves 11 counties in the 11,500 square miles surrounding Houston. The YMCA strives to never turn anyone away, regardless of age, income, or background, due to an inability to pay.
